In the larger context of Plains Indian history, the Northern Cheyenne seem to drop from public consciousness following their military defeat in the campaigns of 1876-77 and their subsequent removal to an arid reservation in western Indian Territory. Mari Sandoz somewhat rescued these people from obscurity in her partially fictionalized Cheyenne Autumn (1953), which dramatized their mistreatment on the reservation, their heroic efforts to return to traditional homelands in Montana, and the bloody 1879 breakout from Ft. The presidential campaign of 1964 became a significant turning point in Virginia politics as the 24th Amendment eliminated poll taxes, black political organizations organized voter registration drives, and suburbanites, newcomers, and recent college graduates were attracted to the Republican Party. Republican candidates had made strong showings in elections in 1962 and 1963, due in part to the policies of the Kennedy administration. Democratic Senator Harry F. Byrd, Sr., publicly opposed many of the fiscal and social policies of the Kennedy-Johnson administration, creating difficulty among Republicans in choosing someone to oppose him. During the summer of 1990, the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum hosted a symposium of Custer scholars and buffs. Rather than devoting their exclusive attention to the subtleties of the legendary 1876 "Last Stand," these researchers examined the life of the second most recognized soldier to emerge from the fight at Little Big Horn-Captain Myles Keogh. The product of their labors has now been published as eighteen loosely integrated essays in this oversized and expensive book that comprises volume 9 in Upton's "Montana and the West Series."
