John C. Freemont's Expeditions Into Utah: An Historical Analysis Of The Explorer's Contributions And Significance To The Region, Alexander L. Baugh

Theses and Dissertations

John Charles Fremont conducted five expeditions to the West during a period of twelve years (1842-1854). His explorations in northern Utah in 1843 focused primarily on the scientific analysis and survey of the Great Salt Lake. General John Henry Winder's Administration Of Martial Law In Richmond, 1862-1864, John Michael Cobb

History Theses & Dissertations

General John Henry Winder enforced martial law in the Confederate capital in Richmond from the winter of 1862 .to the spring of 1864. Winder's Richmond was plagued with lawlessness, disloyalty, and espionage. He was an experienced and capable commander who enforced his summary orders diligently. But Winder's regime only succeeded in managing the city for brief periods. The complex problems he confronted probably were insurmountable; by the end of his administration Richmond remained in turmoil. Several factors were responsible for this: numerous people were willing to risk prison to participate in the lucrative liquor trade, the basis for much of …

This thesis describes the military career of John Bigelow, Jr. , with emphasis on the professional development of United States Army officers. Bigelow articulated a comprehensive concept of total^ar as he perceived its development in the United States. …

Born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1815, Anna Ella Carroll was the eldest daughter of Maryland Governor Thomas King Carroll. By the early 1850s, she had become a political pamphleteer for the Know-Nothing Party, a nativist and anti-Catholic organization. She wrote a number of books and election pamphlets supporting the presidential candidacy of Millard Fillmore in 1856. In the election of 1860, she promoted the candidacy of John Minor Botts of Virginia, a strong Unionist.;When Civil War began, Carroll worked to support Lincoln's action, and wrote several pamphlets on his behalf. She argues, as did Lincoln, that the …

Trouble To The Eastward: The Failure Of Anglo-Indian Relations In Early Maine, Emerson W. Baker

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation examines Anglo-Indian relations in seventeenth-century Maine. Previous studies have stressed the failure of the English to understand or get along with the Indians of Maine, without fully examining the background of both sides. This dissertation aims to correct misperceptions of and generalizations about the nature of both native and English societies in early Maine. By using the ethnohistorical perspective, it explores the nature of Anglo-Abenaki interactions and why this relationship broke down.;The focus of Anglo-Indian interaction in early Maine was the fur trade and the land trade. During the seventeenth century, both sides became increasingly dependent upon trade, …

Judicial Prosecution Of Prisoners For Lds Plural Marriage: Prison Sentences, 1884-1895, Rosa Mae Mcclellan Evans

Theses and Dissertations

The practice of polygamy among the Mormons during the nineteenth century was vigorously prosecuted by the federal government in response to the demands of those whose political and economic goals could best be served through exploitation of the national attitude toward polygamy. Hundreds of men served prison terms for practicing what they believed was their religious obligation. This study of the sentences from the prison admission records has focused on the comparative severity of the judges, examines age as an influencing factor in sentencing, and compares the sentences of the polygamists with those for crimes against person and property.

The Republican Party And Civil Rights, 1877-1976, Gordon E. Sparks Jan 1986

The Republican Party And Civil Rights, 1877-1976, Gordon E. Sparks

Masters Theses

There have been many works written on both the Republican and the Democratic parties. Many works have also described the problem of civil rights and the historical difficulties blacks have had in an attempt to fit in politically. These works, however, have left out one major aspect of this process. Relationships of blacks to the political parties themsevles must be studied to understand one aspect of their continuous struggle for civil rights in America.

It is time that an overview be done on how the political parties have dealt with the civil rights problem throughout their histories. The Republican party …

The American Reaction To Germany's Annexation Of Austria, Mark A. Tarner Jan 1986

The American Reaction To Germany's Annexation Of Austria, Mark A. Tarner

Masters Theses

Germany's annexation of Austria in March 1938 was the cumulation of almost twenty years of Austrian dissatisfaction with the Treaty of Saint Germain, the lack of consistent political and economic support by the western democracies and the international instability of the 1930s. All these factors worked in favor of pro-Anschluss Germans and Austrians and to the handicap of the allies. Once Adolf Hitler came to power, he drastically changed German policy toward Austria. Anschluss had special significance for Hitler and his decision to abandon an evolutionary revision of Austria's political status to one of radical expansionism and annexation proved fatal …

The Free Negro In Illinois Prior To The Civil War, 1818-1860, Steven J. Savery Jan 1986

The Free Negro In Illinois Prior To The Civil War, 1818-1860, Steven J. Savery

Masters Theses

Free Negroes embodied one of the great dilemmas in the ante-bellum history of the state of Illinois. Nominally a free state, Illinois endeavored mightily to suppress, exclude, and dispose of a class of people who were the ultimate result of the anti-slavery movement. While a majority of Illinoisans deemed the peculiar institution undesirable, they had no intention of accepting free Negroes as equal citizens. Free blacks were often regarded as dangerous and a menace to the well-being of the entire society. Yet, Illinois reconciled its apparently contradictory views on slavery and the free Negro to a remarkable degree.

The reconciliation …
