The Theatre In America During The Revolution, Jared Brown
Jared Brown
Whether moralistic or satirical, the plays of the American Revolution offer unique insights into the sympathies and fears of both loyal and dissident parties, and so serve as a telling document of a socially turbulent age. Brown's extensive research coheres into an invaluable theatrical and historical chronicle that should prove a useful resource for those working in the field. Content Provided by Syndetics.
The Dramatic Tradition Of The Middle Ages, Clifford Davidson
The Dramatic Tradition Of The Middle Ages, Clifford Davidson
Clifford Davidson
The twenty-five essays in this collection provide unusual insights into early European drama. Written by American, European, and Japanese scholars, the contributions focus on such subjects as recent discoveries of medieval music-dramas and the conditions of their composition and performance pictorial elements in English and Continental vemacular drama, the later history of medieval drama, and secular plays and playing. The articles first appeared in The Early Drama, Art, and Music Review, which was the official journal of the EDAM project at the Medieval institute Western Michigan University and are included here for their unique contribution to drama studies. Altogether, the …

Corpus Christi Plays At York: A Context For Religious Drama, Clifford Davidson
Corpus Christi Plays At York: A Context For Religious Drama, Clifford Davidson
Clifford Davidson
For roughly two centuries, the streets of the city of York were home to the annual performance of a cycle of mystery plays held in conjunction with the festival of Corpus Christi. Remarkable as the resilience of such an event is, no scholar has yet to survey fully the plays' urban setting, especially with a view to understanding how and why they might have continued to appeal to citizens and spectators. One theory has been that the City of York made the guilds perform the plays. Yet, as Davidson argues, this is not a satisfactory solution, despite the admittedly coercive …

A "Temple Of Pleasure:" Missoula's Wilma Theatre, Elizabeth 'Libi' A. Sundermann
Elizabeth 'Libi' Sundermann
The Wilma Theatre in downtown Missoula, Montana, has provided the city and surrounding area with entertainment since 1921. W. A. "Billy" Simons, president of the Northwest Theatre Company, commissioned the building's construction in 1920, during the heyday of the movie palace. In addition to the well-appointed theatre, the building housed a café , an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a gymnasium, offices, and apartments.
New Orleans Unveiled: Fanon And A Reconceptualization Of The Performative, Lynnell Thomas
New Orleans Unveiled: Fanon And A Reconceptualization Of The Performative, Lynnell Thomas
Lynnell Thomas
This article examines Frantz Fanon's "Algeria Unveiled" as a reconceptualization of J. L. Austin's theory of the performative. Austin, whose examples of the performative all assume an equal, if not harmonious, relationship, overlooks instances of incompatibility and inequality. Fanon's post-colonial framework, in contrast, illustrates the markedly different types of intentions, uptake, and conventions which inform the speech act in cases of extreme inequality. In these cases, the powerless and seemingly voiceless use tacitly agreed upon conventions inappropriately to attain what they would not be able to have otherwise. Fanon's notion of the performative is used to explore the performative resistance …

Movable Pillars: Organizing Dance 1956-1978, Katja Kolcio
Movable Pillars: Organizing Dance 1956-1978, Katja Kolcio
Katja Kolcio Ph.D.
Movable Pillars traces the development of dance as scholarly inquiry over the course of the 20th century, and describes the social-political factors that facilitated a surge of interest in dance research in the period following World War II. This surge was reflected in the emergence of six key dance organizations: the American Dance Guild, the Congress on Research in Dance, the American Dance Therapy Association, the American College Dance Festival Association, the Dance Critics Association, and the Society of Dance History Scholars. Kolcio argues that their founding between the years 1956 and 1978 marked a new period of collective action …

Festivals And Plays In Late Medieval Britain, Clifford Davidson
Clifford Davidson
The most comprehensive survey to date of medieval festival playing in Britain, this study presents an inclusive view of the drama in the British Isles. It offers detailed readings of individual plays-including the little studied Bodley plays, among others - as well as a summary of what is known of their production. Organized around the rituals of the liturgical seasons, the book clarifies the relationship between liturgical feast and dramatic celebration.
