The English language folktales collected from coastal New England in the 19^th and 20^th centuries display a prominence of weather magic motifs compared with folktales from other regions of the United States. This paper aims to explain the success of the weather magic theme in New England folklore collections and to serve as a starting point for scholarly discourse on the subject, which has hitherto been sparse. This study utilizes climate research, both scholarly and popular collections of folktales, local travel guides, and colonial and labor histories. Although numerous countries and individuals were involved in the exploration and mapping of the Americas, it was the Portuguese who set the stage during the fifteenth century for the ensuing discoveries in the New World. Portuguese-born and sponsored explorers played a significant role, especially in charting a route around the southern tip of South America; in exploring and exploiting the waters bordering the northeast coast of North America; and in exploring the Pacific Coast of North America.

This exhibition began in 1986, when the University of Southern Maine received an extraordinary collection of rare maps, atlases, and globes donated by Lawrence M.C. and Eleanor Houston Smith. In 1987, in response to a call from the National Endowment for the Humanities for programs relating to the Columbian Quincentenary, the Maine Humanities Council submitted a proposal for the "Land of Norumbega" project.
