The Maine Folklife Center has embarked on an ambitious project to digitize the entire collection of the Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History. To that end, the University of Maine has contracted with George Blood L.P. of Philadelphia to provide audio digitization services to create a digital preservation master of each of our sound files for the Library of Congress and the University of Maine from our original copies of analog tapes (reel to reel, cassettes, and VHS). Since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, the number of students with disabilities attending college has increased steadily. At UMaine we have seen this trend first hand. DSS has tracked our student data for a number of years and over the past decade the number of students with documented disabilities served by DSS has increased 82.7%. During the 2001-02 school year we assisted 214 students with disabilities. Last year we worked with 391 students.

A Company Of Shadows: Slaves And Poor Free Menial Laborers In Cumberland County, Maine, 1760 – 1775, Charles P.M. Outwin

Although slaves and poor, free menial laborers were by no means a majority of the population in late colonial-era Maine, they represented a culturally and socioeconomically significant part of commercial society there, especially at Falmouth in Casco Bay (now Portland) and in coastal Cumberland County. This essay uncovers the lives of the Falmouth’s small slave population and its larger poor menial laborer population from 1760 up to the port city’s destruction by the British in 1775. The Bodwell Granite Company Store And The Community Of Vinalhaven, Maine, 1859-1919, Cynthia Burns Martin

From the late 1850s to the late 1910s, Bodwelll Granite Company on Vinalhaven Island operated a Company Store from which employees could purchase a wide variety of consumer goods. In the early decades of its existence, the Company Store was generally popular with the company’s employees and the island community. Because of certain competitive advantages, and because the company was guaranteed a profit through federal contracts, the company store often had lower prices than its competitors. But by the late nineteenth century, the store’s prices were often higher than its competitors and the store became part of the growing rift …

Wabanaki Resistance And Healing: An Exploration Of The Contemporary Role Of An Eighteenth Century Bounty Proclamation In An Indigenous Decolonization Process, Bonnie D. Newsom, Jamie Bisonette-Lewey

The purpose of this paper is to examine the contemporary role of an eighteenth century bounty proclamation issued on the Penobscot Indians of Maine. We focus specifically on how the changing cultural context of the 1755 Spencer Phips Bounty Proclamation has transformed the document from serving as a tool for sanctioned violence to a tool of decolonization for the Indigenous peoples of Maine. We explore examples of the ways indigenous and non-indigenous people use the Phips Proclamation to illustrate past violence directed against Indigenous peoples. Faculty often question why they aren't always informed when there is a student with a disability enrolled in their class. When students request accommodations some of those accommodations directly need faculty involvement, for example, the accommodation of extended time on a test. For these accommodations a request letter would be brought to the faculty by the student. However, there are accommodations that do not typically require faculty action. Obtaining a peer notetaker is one example where DSS would do the work without informing faculty about the student. The student may be receiving mentoring to assist them with college transition and …
