Let's cut right to the chase: what's a social historian like me doing writing a biography of a dead white man named Edward J. Logue? I've never written a biography before. My two previous books, Making a New Deal and A Consumers' Republic, have made contributions to twentieth-century United States history by giving agency to social groups often considered powerless, such as industrial workers, first-generation immigrants, rank-and-file supporters of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, African American consumers, new suburbanites, and female consumer activists. This address, delivered at the Chautauqua Institution Hall of Philosophy on July 20, 2018, reviews the life of John Heyl Vincent (1832-1920) and his relationship to the Chautauqua Institution. Vincent was an American Methodist clergyman and bishop and a leading figure in the Sunday School movement. In 1874 Vincent and businessman Lewis Miller (1829-1899) established an innovative, trans-denominational Sunday School teachers’ training event on the shores of Lake Chautauqua in southwestern New York state. Various heroes of Christianity have been celebrated by Protestants for centuries. From followers to devout disciples, Christians have recognized certain individuals as being role models. These people have stood as leaders of the faith and spanned from tax collectors, to fishermen, and even to government authorities. Often overlooked, though, were those who made advancements in the sciences, philosophy, mathematics, and other scholarly fields. In certain professions and studies, Protestants were persecuted and forced to deny their beliefs. Leonardo Fibonacci was a mathematician in the late twelfth to mid-thirteenth century. He grew up and was trained in North Africa, where his father worked. His major contributions to mathematics can be found in his books- Liber Abaci, Practica Geometriae, Flos, and Liber Quadrotorum. Little can be found about his Christian faith, but fruits of his faith can be seen through some of his work. As a mathematician, I would like to exemplify Christ in all aspects of my life.

Gottfried W. Leibniz was a philosopher and mathematician who lived in Germany from 1646 to 1716. He first gained a bachelor's degree in philosophy, then later earned one in law. As his life went on, he made many contributions to the mathematical world. He worked also with physics, dynamics, and attempted to create a calculating machine. This paper examines the life of Christiaan Huygens, a Dutch Mathematician born in 1629. Through this examination of his life, I discuss his training, a few of his colleagues, and his major mathematical discoveries. These major discoveries include Saturn's rings, the pendulum clock, and the Wave Theory of Light. The paper then moves into Huygens's faith and the effect that this had on his work. Wynkoop changed the theological framework within the international denomination of the Church of the Nazarene. This is a biographical study of Elizabeth D. Kane (1836-1909), travel writer and wife of Thomas L. Kane, non-Mormon friend of the nineteenth-century Mormons of Utah. Primary source materials are mainly Elizabeth's fourteen diaries (spanning the years 1853 to 1909), letters and narrative accounts. Elizabeth was greatly influenced by Thomas, while maintaining her independence. She was interested in religion and feminist issues, and those interests, combined with her marital relationship, shaped her life's direction. Adams commented that "Like Voltaire, with whom it's commonplace to compare him, Erasmus was a prodigious correspondent." Erasmus and Voltaire shared much more than an affinity for writing letters. A list of their similarities reads much like one of those supposedly eerie lists of coincidences between the presidencies of Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. Aberrant Mormon Settlers: The Homesteaders Of Highland, Utah, David T. Durfey

This thesis is a history of the original thirty-seven homesteaders of Highland, Utah. It covers a period of about twenty-five years, 1875-1900. The study provides an example of a aberrant community which was not established in the same, distinctive style of settlement as the typical Mormon village. In addition it describes the relationship between the original residents and non-residents of Highland with the surrounding villages of Lehi, American Fork, and Alpine.
