Gilbert F. Casellas (L '77) is a lawyer and businessman. He is Chairman of OMNITRU, a Washington, D.C. area investment and consulting firm, a director of Prudential Financial, trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, and advisor to Toyota Motor North America and Comcast Corporation. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Law Institute. From 1994 to 1998 he served as chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Regina Austin (L '73), William A. Schnader Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania, pursues her interest in the overlapping burdens of race, gender, and class oppression in traditional legal scholarship, as well as in her work on documentary films. Wabanaki Cultural Awareness Program Planned, Joe Carr

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Maine Rural Development Council (MRDC), an affiliated program of University of Maine Cooperative Extension, will host a Wabanaki Cultural Awareness Conference on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999 at the Sockalexis Arena on Indian Island. Expected to attend the event are some 100 representatives of Maine's 20 federal and state agencies that provide services and/or resources to Maine's tribal communities. A group of statelegislators will also attend the conference.

Sexual Difference And Black Communities, Barbara Smith

During my fellowship year I have had the opportunity to deepen my understanding of Black lesbians and gays' historical relationship to large Black communities through interviews with a variety of informants. I have especially made progress in my research concerning Black lesbians and gays in Cleveland, Ohio (which was the focus of my CLAGS colloquium) and in my documentation of Black educational institutions as identifiable locations of lesbian and gay life.

Umaine, Penobscot Nation And Bangor Court Systems Collaborate On Alternative Sentencing Program, Peter Cook

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The University of Maine, the Penobscot Tribal Court and the Bangor Court system are joining together to offer an alternative to traditional punitive sentences. The Changing Lives Through Literature program will offer aseries of eight weekly meetings at the Honors Center on the UMaine campus. This will be the first time that the two court systems have collaborated.

Umaine Professors Examine Race Factor In Support For Police Use Of Force, Peter Cook

A recent paper by two University of Maine sociology professors indicates that racial prejudice playsa factor in determining support for police use of force.

"Racial Prejudice and Support by Whites for Police Use of Force: A Research Note," was written by StevenBarkan and Steven Cohn, professors of sociology at UMaine. The paper has been published in a recent issue of "Justice Quarterly," the official journal of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

History Faculty Research

The relationship between the histories of woman suffrage and U.S. politics suffered from a reluctance on the part of both fields to include the other until recently. Political historians refrained from in-depth discussions of the eighty-year movement to gain the vote for women until the new political history expanded the definition of political actors and activities. Women's historians (with a few notable exceptions) discussed the suffrage movement as a type of voluntarist reform activity, rather than contextualizing it within political institutions and systems. Ellen Carol DuBois's study of suffrage through the passage of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments departed significantly …
