[2023 Honorable Mention] What Does The Absence Of My History Do To My Identity & Pride?: Utilizing Autohistoría-Teoría Methodology To Trace Educational Experience, Jissel Antonio
Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award
Utilizing Gloria Anzaldúa’s Autohistoria-teoría methodology, this humanistic study explores embodied experiences in the education system, guided by the question, What does the absence of my history do to my identity and pride? Theorizing across historical and personal contexts, I weave together personal archival materials, including school test scores, magical thinking, storytelling, and historical legacies of colonialism and American education. Inspired by Anzaldúa’s method of inquiry, I explore the relationship between identity and education by theorizing the reverberations between history and personal/collective experience.
Addams’S Methodologies Of Writing, Thinking, And Activism, Marilyn Fischer
Addams’S Methodologies Of Writing, Thinking, And Activism, Marilyn Fischer
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
To understand Addams’s texts, readers need to attend both to her evolutionary methodologies and to her interpretive strategies. Addams was an evolutionary scientist and sociologist in the days before natural selection became merged with genetics and before sociology adopted a stance of positivistic objectivity. Like other intellectuals at the nineteenth century’s turn, Addams addressed contemporary social problems by locating them within their evolutionary histories and proposing ways of moving society toward healthy equilibrium. She used specific social theories as tools, selecting the ones best suited for each given social problem. Evolutionary theorizing served as foundation and framing for her writings. …
Reflections On Charlene's Influence, Marilyn Fischer
Reflections On Charlene's Influence, Marilyn Fischer
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
A contemporary appraisal of the breadth, significance, and legacy of the work of Charlene Haddock Seigfried, this book brings together writings focused on pragmatist feminism/feminist pragmatism, contemporary pragmatism, William James and the reconstruction of philosophy, education and American philosophy in the 21st century.
Charlene Haddock Seigfried is a looming figure in American thought and feminist theory who coined the phrase 'pragmatist feminist' which has become an increasingly important concept in contemporary philosophy. Seigfried argues that pragmatism and its rich history is a natural ally for feminism and that the creative combination of these two traditions can pave the way for …
Paracelsus And The Biblical Foundations Of Magic: Natural, Celestial, And Demonic Astronomy, Dane Thor Daniel
Paracelsus And The Biblical Foundations Of Magic: Natural, Celestial, And Demonic Astronomy, Dane Thor Daniel
Lake Campus Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Paracelsus’s understanding of magic--which he discussed in terms of the types of natural, “celestial” (or Christian), and demonic astronomy—is based largely on his idiosyncratic Biblical exegesis. An important and iconoclastic voice within early modern natural philosophy and medicine as well as Reformation spiritualism, the Swiss-German broke with medieval theories of magic via his synthesis of theology and magic. Although incorporating the mostly extra-Biblical concepts of the tria prima (salt, sulphur, and mercury), elemental matrices, and microcosm-macrocosm analogy, Paracelsus’s spagyrical world (or magico-alchemical cosmos) also featured a concept developed in his extensive theological writings, namely, that the universe consists of two …

The Rise And Fall Of The Fact (Research Materials), Holy Cross Libraries
Library Resources for Campus Events
A bibliography of resources available through the Holy Cross Libraries which provide additional information related to "The Rise and Fall of the Fact" a lecture by award-winning author and speaker Jill Lepore held at the College of the Holy Cross on January 31, 2019.
Lepore is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History at Harvard University who teaches classes in evidence, historical methods, humanistic inquiry, and American history. Much of her scholarship explores absences and asymmetries in the historical record, with a particular emphasis on the histories and technologies of evidence and of privacy. As a wide-ranging and …
The Toxicity Of Otherness, Justin Malone
The Toxicity Of Otherness, Justin Malone
English Department: Traveling American Modernism Posters (ENG 366, Fall 2018)
This poster is a brief overview of my research on the dangerous philosophical principle of Othering, wherein a group of people are ostracized for being different from the majority. While categorization of information is a fundamental aspect of how the brain works, the categorization of people homogenizes their complexities. In doing so, a group is seen as a single entity, rather than individuals, which strips them of their humanity. After a group has been Othered, society will inevitably invoke some method of forced displacement upon them. Additionally, the article this poster summarizes puts emphasis on the importance of affected individuals …

The Physicist - Philosophers: The Legacy Of James Clerk Maxwell And Herrmann Von Helmholtz, Peter Skiff
The Physicist - Philosophers: The Legacy Of James Clerk Maxwell And Herrmann Von Helmholtz, Peter Skiff
Faculty Books & Manuscripts
One of the most effective, and most mysterious, tools of modern theoretical physics is a mathematical method including what is here called “field theory.” The success of this procedure in unraveling the “zoology” of fundamental particles and their behavior is a marvel. The philosophical context of this marvel is the source of endless academic controversy. The core of the method is a blend of mathematics and description created by “physicist-philosophers,” from Maxwell and Helmholtz to Einstein and Schrödinger. This book tries to unravel the mystery, or at least chronicle it.

Silence Of The Lambs, Ruby Guyot
The Case of Charity Lamb (2015)
This collection of poetry and short prose seeks to build on the idea that so little is actually known of Charity Lamb — her thoughts and ideas about everything, from her perspective on life to the killing of her husband, Nathaniel. This collection honors these unknown pages of history by providing several different states of mind on behalf of Charity Lamb, including guilt (or lack of it), relief, fear, and loneliness.

Einstein: His Space And Times, Steven Gimbel
Einstein: His Space And Times, Steven Gimbel
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
The commonly held view of Albert Einstein is of an eccentric genius for whom the pursuit of science was everything. But in actuality, the brilliant innovator whose Theory of Relativity forever reshaped our understanding of time was a man of his times, always politically engaged and driven by strong moral principles. An avowed pacifist, Einstein’s mistrust of authority and outspoken social and scientific views earned him death threats from Nazi sympathizers in the years preceding World War II. To him, science provided not only a means for understanding the behavior of the universe, but a foundation for considering the deeper …

Henry Beard Delany And Emma Beard Delaney, Brien Laing
Henry Beard Delany And Emma Beard Delaney, Brien Laing
Books
Henry Beard Delany and Emma Beard Delaney were two African-Americans who rose from the obscurity of an enslaved family to achieve distinguished success in their individual lives. A period of time does not portray a history. To achieve that, one needs ideas, theories, and assumptions. There must be a concept with a structure systematically laid out, which reaches points of view leading to firm conclusions that allow the recording of this history of two dynamic African-Americans. This study is an examination of two remarkable lives. Theirs is a story of dignified control over their destinies, displaying only rare flinching from …

"This volume is a Festschrift with a difference: a collection of essays written by colleagues to honor students -- past, present, future -- rather than an aged academic kindred spirit. the end-product of a 'Great Conversation' which extended over two years (1985-1987), the volume contains ten essays by nine Dominican College faculty members.
Each essay has been developed in the context of inter-disciplinary discussions to which specialists in art history, history, literature, and philosophy contributed their knowledge and insights. Lest that statement suggest placid armchair soliloquies. let me quickly add that the discussions were frank and vigorous, and served to …
Genius And Monologue, Ken Frieden
Genius And Monologue, Ken Frieden
Books
"Genius is the intellectual obsession of our time," Ken Frieden writes, "and monologue is one symptom of the disorder." From ancient, spiritual conceptions of genius to modern notions of the extraordinary mind, Frieden traces associated philosophic and literary expressions of inspiration and individuality.
Frieden juxtaposes the evolving forms of genius with traditions of monologue in pre-Shakespearean and Shakespearean drama, Romantic poetry, and nineteenthand twentieth-century fiction. He delineates the linguistic mechanisms that have shaped the dominant ideology of genius, showing that while literary monologues typically break the conventions of dialogue, aethetics ultimately identifies originality with deviance and madness. The successive guises …
