Lowell E. Long’s interview focuses on the region of Appalachia: its location, environments, people, and identity. Mr. Long was born in April 1941 in War, McDowell County, WV. His family moved to East Liverpool, OH, after World War II, and relocated to Huntington, WV, in January 1945. In the audio clip provided, Mr. Long discusses what it means to be Appalachian and focuses on family bonds and sense of belonging in the region. Bob Chapman was born in Louisa, KY. He grew up on Homemade Holler in the coal community of McVeigh, KY, located in Pike County. His father worked for the Eastern Coal Corporation as an explosions miner. Mr. Chapman attended a two-room school house for a short time in the 1940s, but continued his education through high school in the McVeigh school system. Robert D. Hanson, son of Gettysburg College President Henry W.A. Hanson, was interviewed on October 2, 1998 by Michael J. Birkner & David Hedrick. He discusses his father's presidency, and what it was like to grow up in Gettysburg College's White House. Ms. Jackie Wall was born in Calcutta India, in 1926, and later lived with her Aunt and Uncle. After her Uncle died she moved with her Aunt to Baltimore, then later to Farmville, Virginia. Jackie married J. Barrye Wall Jr. and moved back to Farmville. She discusses her thoughts about the school closings and the Wall's involvement in massive resistance, as well as her recollection of the time period and the hostilities in the community. This interview was conducted by Susan Bagby and Carolyn Dewolfe.
