Purpose Statement: Several studies have shown that aerobic exercise can have a positive impact on alleviating symptoms experienced by individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite this evidence, the potential benefits of exercise for both PD patients and their care partners (PD dyad) remain unexplored. This research project investigates the effectiveness, therapeutic collaborations, and physical outcomes of a virtual reality (VR) tandem cycling program specifically designed for PD dyads.

Methods: Following approval from the Prisma Health Institutional Review Board, individuals with PD were identified and screened by clinical neurologists. The pre-testing measures for PD dyads (N=9) included emotional and cognitive status …

Introduction: There is generally a concerning likelihood of burnout in healthcare workers. Given the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare workers, our institution identified the need for wellness interventions to foster adaptive functioning and mitigate burnout. The purpose of this pilot project was to assess the feasibility of virtual holistic interventions like meditation, art, laughter therapy and dance and their impact on overall well-being of physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs).

Methods: A series of 12 virtual sessions (art therapy, dance therapy, mindfulness-based practices/meditation and laughter therapy) were offered to providers over a 6-month period. Participants completed an online survey reporting …

This article examines the combined efforts of the Nurses’ Emergency Council (NEC), settlement houses, and the Department of Health during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic in New York City. To coordinate public health nursing, the NEC united the settlements and municipal agencies into an umbrella organization that was chaired by Lillian Wald of the Henry Street Settlement. Together, the NEC and the Health Department recruited a corps of nurses to treat influenza patients, primarily in their homes. Historical accounts of the 1918 Pandemic often emphasize the incompetence of American cities in dealing with influenza’s spread. New York’s Health Commissioner Royal Copeland, …

Introduction: Health professions students, including student pharmacists, have been impacted by the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19 pandemic) as schools have transitioned to remote learning and cancelled milestone events. During times of crises, media consumption and hobby participation also impact well-being. The adverse emotional responses and coping strategies of student pharmacists amidst the COVID-19 pandemic have not been evaluated, nor have factors that may contribute to emotional responses. The purpose of this study is to determine Doctor of Pharmacy students’ emotional responses and coping precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the influence of media use, working status, and participation in hobbies. …

Introduction: Burnout in emergency medicine and in residency training has been well-described. The impact of demographic, individual, and programmatic factors on burnout have not previously been determined in a national survey of emergency medicine residents. This study aimed to identify personal and environmental factors impacting resident burnout in a national sample of emergency medicine residents.

Methods: A prospective Emergency Medicine Resident Wellness Survey was administered in 2017. We surveyed respondents on demographic, personal, and environmental factors; each respondent also completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey. This is especially true for an organization with the legacy held by the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of the Incarnate Word. Memories recounted by nursing faculty were collected to enhance information provided in the two-volume chronicle written by Sister Patrice Slattery in 1995 entitled, “Promises to Keep” and the last history of the school, “The Story of One School of Nursing” written by Sister Charles Marie Frank in 1976.

Introduction: Second Victim Syndrome (SVS) describes the phenomenon in which a caregiver experiences a traumatic psychological and emotional response to an adverse patient event or medical error. Using quantitative survey analysis, we aim to better understand the personal factors that affect SVS development and recovery.

Methods: Caregivers at a small urban academic medical center who had experienced an adverse patient event in the past six months were invited to take part in this institution-wide, voluntary, quantitative, cross-sectional study. Three surveys were administered; the Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory (HRLSI) was used as a surrogate to measure stressful life events. The …

This study explores the largely-unknown history of missionary nursing on British Columbia’s Northwest Coast between 1901 and 1925, built around the experience of nurse Doris Nichols. From 1903 until 1935 in the Haíɫzaqv (Heiltsuk) village of Wáglísla (Bella Bella) there existed a small but persistent school of nursing within a Methodist mission hospital. The hospital was built with the intention to bring spiritual and physical healing to local Indigenous people, however the medical missionaries served all in need along the central coast, and the nursing school sustained this mission. The 100-year milestone of university nursing education at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2019 offers a pause for reflection and inquiry. History assists us to illuminate current issues and debates in light of past events. An examination of the legacy of Ethel Johns and others who held the vision of why nursing education should enter the university in 1919 sheds light on its historical significance, then and now. At his death in 1945, Sir James William Barrett, a medical doctor in the state of Victoria left a bequest to the University of Melbourne, his alma mater. Barrett’s entire professional life was conducted at the University. According to his will, Barrett had been so influenced by his experiences of American universities which offered education in nursing that he directed a sum of money to the University of Melbourne for the foundation and/or development of a School of Nursing.

Contemporary struggles in nursing education, including debates on jurisdiction over program approval, competency-based education, and curricula, are not new conversations amongst nurse leaders. Discussions on these very topics, spanning international borders, occurred between 1917-1925, as American nurse leaders looked to extend their influence over nursing education throughout the world. Introduction: No study before has been conducted looking at the level of optimism and pessimism in emergency medicine residents and how it may be linked to resident burnout. This is the first national- level assessment of these personality factors.

Methods: This was a prospective survey study leveraging data obtained through the 2017 National Emergency Medicine Resident Wellness Survey, which included the Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R). The Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R) is a 10-item tool that measures levels of optimism versus pessimism.

Results: We found that the majority of our resident respondents scored in the moderate category of the LOT-R. Additionally, …

Gina Bellafante wrote in the New York Times on 3/1/20 that the city would feel the impact of its hospital shortage when the Covid-19 Virus arrived. She specifically singled out the closure and sale of St. Vincent's Hospital, noting its replacement by luxury condominiums. My article here provides an example of St. Vincent Hospital in action at the turn of the twentieth century when it cared for over a hundred Titanic survivors. Its disaster expertise is now sorely missed in New York City. St. Vincent's Hospital was founded and run by the religious order Sisters of Charity in the Nineteenth …

Includes a letter to her parents in Canal Fulton, Ohio, from Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky describing a review of the 98th Infantry Division; photographs of her and fellow nurses; a nurses roster; meal tickets; and a whimsical “Dishonorable Discharge” from the Army. Also includes a medical history of the 32nd Station Hospital Unit written by Chief Nurse Helen W. Brammer.
