Memories Of War: An Oral History Of The United States Army Special Forces Actions In The Gulf War, Justin Mcintosh
Memories Of War: An Oral History Of The United States Army Special Forces Actions In The Gulf War, Justin Mcintosh
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
This thesis uses memories of former members of 5th Special Forces Group as the lens to explore the impacts and context of US Army Special Forces operations and activities during the Persian Gulf War. The Persian Gulf War was the defeat of the Iraqi military in Kuwait at the hands of a technologically superior United States force. Historians have focused Persian Gulf War scholarship on three key aspects: the interpersonal relationship between the United States military commanders and political leaders, the rapid deployment of military forces to the Middle East, and the use of airpower to strike at enemy centers …

Op Lobe And The Evacuation Of Canadian Personnel From Libya, 2014: An Interview With Major (Retired) Doug Henderson, Andrew Burtch
Canadian Military History
In the aftermath of the 2011 Arab Spring uprising in Libya and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s intervention that overturned Muammar Gaddafi’s government amid fears of reprisals against civilians, Canada and other countries re-established a diplomatic presence. The region was still unstable with many competing militias in a tentative truce following Gaddafi’s downfall. Canada’s embassy required a military presence to secure the compound and the safety of Canadian VIPs. In July 2014, the men and women of Operation LOBE were forced to evacuate from Libya amid a diplomatic exodus during a resurgence of civil war. This piece, based largely on …

Crossing The Grebbe Line: Canada’S Faustian Bargain To Save Civilians In The Western Netherlands, April-May 1945, Nathan Dyck
Canadian Military History
Beginning at the military-political level and ending at the regimental level, this paper will explore the growth of Canadian responsibility within a failing Allied relief framework throughout the Dutch Hunger Winter 1944-1945. Beginning in early April 1945, I Canadian Corps experienced a growing responsibility to secure an independently negotiated and effective ceasefire on the Grebbe Line to enable transport of food prior to broader German surrender. Under the name of Operation Faust, I Corps utilised targeted medical and food relief practices to address gaps in Allied relief capacity, following what Canadian Military Headquarters (CMHQ) referred to as a “hastily improvised” …
Pursuit To Valenciennes 1918: The Fate Of Soldiers At The Point Of Capture, Brian Pascas
Pursuit To Valenciennes 1918: The Fate Of Soldiers At The Point Of Capture, Brian Pascas
Canadian Military History
This article tracks the Canadian Corps’ pursuit of the retreating German army in the last weeks of the First World War. As French hamlets, villages and towns were liberated, the war-weary troops—nursing grudges after almost four years of war—encountered civilians who had endured poor and sometimes brutal treatment under the yoke of the cruel invader. During the Battle of Valenciennes hundreds of German soldiers were killed; the vast majority perished under immense artillery barrages. But a number who survived the onslaught of shells and bullets succumbed to Canadians’ rifles while or after surrendering. Motives are identified that drove frontline soldiers …
Thither The Russian Navy? Putin’S Navalization In A Historical Context, William Emerson Bunn
Thither The Russian Navy? Putin’S Navalization In A Historical Context, William Emerson Bunn
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The Syrian operation of 2012 was the first successful employment by Russia of expeditionary warfare, narrowly defined as naval support to Russian (or Soviet) ground forces in a war away from their periphery (i.e., in a country that does not border them), from the sea. This was brought about in part by the development of two types of cruise missiles: advanced anti-ship missiles (which protects their expeditionary force from NATO naval units, enabling local sea control) and new land attack cruise missiles (similar in design and capability to the U.S. Tomahawk). In the past geographical, technological and political constraints …
British Neo-Colonialism In Malaya And Singapore, And U.S. Empire In The Pacific, Wen-Qing Ngoei
British Neo-Colonialism In Malaya And Singapore, And U.S. Empire In The Pacific, Wen-Qing Ngoei
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This essay places the Vietnam War upon the larger canvas of Southeast and East Asian history by studying the long shadow that Britain’s Empire cast over U.S. entanglements across the region. It shows how British officials in Malaya and Singapore directly contributed to the expansion of US involvement in post-1945 Southeast Asia, as well as the overall pro-US trajectory of the region well before the Americanization of the Vietnam conflict.

Why Do Senior Officers Sometimes Fail In Character? The Leaky Character Reservoir, Everett S.P. Spain, Katie E. Matthew, Andrew L. Hagemaster
Why Do Senior Officers Sometimes Fail In Character? The Leaky Character Reservoir, Everett S.P. Spain, Katie E. Matthew, Andrew L. Hagemaster
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article argues senior officers may fail in character because their rate of character development throughout their careers typically decreases as environmental stressors rise. It conceptualizes character as an open system with both gains and leaks over time and integrates existing scholarship on personality and ethical development to create the Leaky Character Reservoir framework, which it then applies to Army officers’ careers. Military leaders will gain a new understanding of character and find specific actions officers, units, and the US Army can undertake to strengthen the character of its senior officers.

American Horse Power During The Great War, Hanna K. Lipsey
American Horse Power During The Great War, Hanna K. Lipsey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation charts the significant, if understudied, history of American horses during the era of World War I, from roughly 1914 to 1919. Its chapters trace how the US Army acquired, used, cared for, and ultimately demobilized horses over the course of that conflict. Beginning with their acquisition, via either an Army Horse Breeding Program or a complicated buying process, horses faced a complex introduction into military service. Life for these animals did not get any easier once they reached the European front. Although the US military was beginning to replace horses with motor trucks and tractors, horses remained central …
