Goddesses Versus Gynecologists: An Analysis Of The History Of Women’S Healthcare, Marion A. Mckenzie
Goddesses Versus Gynecologists: An Analysis Of The History Of Women’S Healthcare, Marion A. Mckenzie
Student Publications
Starting from the downfall of Goddess cultures in Europe, women's health care has been negatively impacted for generations. The rise of the white, male Indo-European "dominator model" along with the witch craze, caused the end of widespread wise women traditions and pharmacopeia methods. After women's traditional voice was silenced, medical colleges were established to pronounce new, "professional" knowledge. Only those who attended these universities were allowed to legally practice medicine; however, during this time, medical research and treatments for women primarily included mutilation and painful, nonsensical regimens. The horrifying state of women's healthcare has since improved, but was originally a …

Department of Surgery Gibbon Society Historical Profiles
Edward William Alton Ochsner kept a plain, metal card file in which he recorded close to 50 years worth of medical experiences, research, and insights. The most populated topics were filed as "Cancer, Lung" and "Cancer, Bronchogenic." These reflected his areas of greatest interest, for which he would go on to produce groundbreaking work. Of his many lifetime accomplishments, he is perhaps best known for being the first to report a link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. This was just one of the many ways in which Ochsner worked to effect social change. The establishment of the Ochsner Health …

Collaboration Is Key: A Study On The Religious Identity Of Catholic And Southern Baptist Hospitals, Benjamin German
Collaboration Is Key: A Study On The Religious Identity Of Catholic And Southern Baptist Hospitals, Benjamin German
History Capstone Research Papers
Since its inception, the Christian church has emphasized physical healing alongside spiritual healing. The Roman Catholics and Southern Baptists established their first hospitals in America in the mid-nineteenth and late-nineteenth centuries respectively. While a number of hospitals bear the names Catholic or Baptist, they do not all necessarily possess the same religious character they once did. This research paper compares and contrasts the hospital ministries of the two Christian sub-groups. It concludes that Roman Catholic hospitals have stayed more true to their religious identity than Southern Baptist hospitals. Since the 1980s, hospitals have formed healthcare networks in mass, a trend …
