Dissertation Summary In this dissertation I have tried to map how the concept of “social engineering” has been used from its inception in the early 1890s to the beginning of its decline in the late 1940s. The study concentrates upon the 1930s. In particular, I have asked who used this concept, in what contexts, and against which adversaries. I have taken most of my material from Sweden and the USA since both of these countries have been seen as examples of successful “organization of modernity.” And social engineering is indeed often taken to be exactly that—an attempt at organizing modernity.

Online, Offline And Beyond: The Social Imaginary In A Scottish Diasporic Online Group, Charles A. Hays

This project uses the method of depth hermeneutics to examine how a group of relatively technologically unsophisticated online discussion participants innovate in the formation of a social imaginary, as defined in Thompson's (1990) explication of the use of media to facilitate social interaction. By deploying a diverse range of technologies with which they are competent, the group avoids the uncertainties of new modalities of social networking such as those represented by Second Life, MySpace and Facebook, while pursuing their goal of discursively negotiating a Scottish cultural identity both online and offline.

This dissertation addresses the manifestation of identity and otherness in the programs and four didactical works in Canadian History for French secondary schools in Quebec from 1955 to 1967. To carry out this research, a diverse number of primary and secondary sources were consulted in order to determine if the expression of identity and otherness in the programs and four didactical works in use corresponded to two forms of clerico-nationalism and to Quebec autonomism of the period. This study is an exploration of the people and the landscape of the well-known Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Although there are many routes that make up the entirety of the pilgrimage, this research is specifically focused on the landscape of the Camino Francés, or French Route, in northern Spain.
