The Center for Access to Justice and Technology (CAJT), formerly Justice Web Collaboratory, was formed at Chicago-Kent in 1999. The CAJT worked to make justice more accessible to the public by promoting the use of the Internet in the teaching, practice, and public access to the law. The CAJT conducted research, built software tools, taught classes, and supported faculty, staff, and student projects on access to justice and technology.

Conference materials for the First Annual Personal Computing Strategies for Lawyers, held in 1985, are missing from the collection. The bulk of the collection consists of conference proceedings from various conferences held at Chicago-Kent or sponsored by Chicago-Kent; the Miscellaneous subseries includes materials from conferences including CLC faculty published materials, and materials from conferences hosted by Chicago-Kent with CLC’s participation. The Chicago-Kent Bulletin was begun in June of 1916 by faculty member Edward J. Veasey, Jr. It was intended to be a monthly publication, described in the 1917 edition of The Transcript as “a medium whereby the events which transpire within the school, worthy of mention may come to light.” Issues of the Bulletin include sections describing the activities of each enrolled class and an alumni section. Issues include an editorial, poetry, humor, photos of faculty members, and cartoons.

Chicago-Kent College of Law has been located in the city of Chicago since its founding in 1888. The first location of the school was the Grand Pacific Hotel, located on Clark Street and Jackson Boulevard, in downtown Chicago. Classes for what was then known as the “Chicago Evening School of Law” began in January of 1888 and were held on the second floor in the Appellate Court rooms. In 1889, having outgrown the Grand Pacific Hotel, the Appellate Court was moved to the fourth floor of the Grand Opera House at 119-21 N. Clark Street. The law school underwent two …

The Chicago-Kent College of Law was founded in 1888 as “The Evening Law Class.” The first record of an anniversary celebration at Chicago-Kent was the 75^th Anniversary, which took place in 1963, followed by the 80^th in 1967, the Centennial in 1987, and the 125^th Anniversary in 2013. Each anniversary was marked with celebratory events, dedications, and programs to commemorate the Law School’s history. Past school-wide celebrations at Chicago-Kent have included “Chicago-Kent Day,” declared in 1961 by Mayor Richard J. The Transcript was first published in 1917 by the classes of Chicago-Kent College of Law. The first edition notes that the idea for “a year book and chronicle of the College” was conceived in the fall of 1916 by the senior class, upon which a committee of members from each class were appointed to undertake the project. Editions followed for each year except 1921 until 1929, when the final edition of The Transcript was published.

Commencements at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law began with Chicago College of Law in 1888. Commencement ceremonies were held annually in June with mid-year class commencement in February. Between the years of 1930-1949, the ceremonies were combined into one with a complete list of both classes in the annual program. After 1968, the mid-year class merged into the regular class. Early degrees awarded were Master of Laws and Bachelor of Laws until 1942 when the first J.D. was awarded to Mabelle C. Eulette. The inaugural issue of the Alumni Directory was published after the 19th year of scholarship at Chicago-Kent College of Law as a tribute to the success of the school. Later copies were printed to foster relationships between alumni. Early copies of the Directory were printed and distributed by the secretary’s office, with later copies (post-1969) produced by the Alumni Association. The final copy issued in print was the 2002 release. The current Alumni Directory is available to students and alumni on the Chicago-Kent College of Law Alumni Association website.

The Commentator is the official IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law student newspaper, an entirely student-generated and managed publication covering Chicago-Kent news and events as well as issues pertinent to the law school community. From 1935 through 1944, two members of the faculty, Harry Osgood and Roger Severns, published an eight-page journal, the Chicago-Kent News. Half of the journal was dedicated to notes concerning alumni, including letters of guidance and inspiration from notably successful alums, and the remainder dealt with current activities at Chicago-Kent. The journal did not contain jokes, cartoons, or other light material — it was primarily for public relations purposes. Only seven issues were published.

The Chicago-Kent College of Law Advisory Board was formed in 1969 when Chicago-Kent College of Law became a part of IIT. Upon the merger, the Board was formed from the 18 members of the former Chicago-Kent Board of Trustees and was intended to govern the school based on assignments from IIT. The board was discontinued in the late 1970s.

The first elected chairman of the Advisory Board was E. Douglas Schwantes (‘29) until February 1970, followed by Clair W. Furlong (’26) until November 1970, when David A. Vogel (’51) became the final chairman.

Much of the work of the Board of Overseers took place through smaller committees, such as the Dean Search Committee, Student Life Committee, Development Committee, Library Committee, and Membership Committee. Founded in 1869, Phi Delta Phi is the oldest legal honorary association in North America. The Territorial Government of Michigan passed an act on August 26, 1817 to establish the “Catholepistemiad,” or University of Michigania, to be located in Detroit. Dissatisfied with the administration of the university, the Territorial Legislature repealed the act and established the University of Michigan as a successor corporation with full rights. Delta Theta Phi was founded at the Cleveland Law School of Baldwin-Wallace College (now Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University) in Ohio in 1900 and became a national fraternity in 1904. In September of 1913, the fraternity amalgamated three other fraternities, Alpha Kappa Phi (begun in Chicago, 1902), Theta Lambda Phi (Pennsylvania, 1903) and Sigma Nu Phi (National University Law School, 1903). The original LIR was hosted in a room provided by the John Crerar Library, staffed by Miss Eloise G. ReQua, founder and first director of the Library of International Relations.
