Institutions, Developmental Alliances, And Economic Development In Korea And Brazil (1950-1985), Charles Paul Winebarger

This paper compares the development of Korea and Brazil, 1950-85. These newly industrialized countries developed at above-average rates among less developed countries. Korea developed more rapidly than Brazil. The paper contends that institutions, interest groups (especially firms) and the state, enter into developmental alliances. Alliances affect policies. Policies, then, affect development.

Findings reveal interesting trends in the 1950s' democracies of the cases. Both countries had semi-autonomous states, equivocally committed to industrialization. Industry was the growth point in each. Korea used local firms to industrialize; Brazil used foreign firms. In both cases, the state allied itself with firms. Policy mostly favored …

Transcriptions and translations of documents for the year 1809, that are part of the archival papers known as the Pueblo Papers or the Spanish-Mexican Archives. These papers, which are housed at the San Jose Historical Museum and managed by the History Museums of San Jose, span the history of the City of San Jose︡ (originally named El Pueblo de San Jose︡ de Guadalupe) from the founding of the second pueblo site in 1797 until the admission of California to statehood in 1850.

God, Union And Liberty : The Military As The Key Player In Costa Rica, 1820-1824, Aaron Arguedas

In Costa Rica at the time of independence a central government did not exist, and even after its organization, it remained very weak. Due to this fact military officers stepped forward to control and govern each town. After controlling each town military officers fought for political control of the country. During these years to become a military officer was the best professional career to follow. Military officers were looked upon with respect, fear and power. As a result military culture became the social realm which controlled towns and guided state formation in the 1820s.
