Culto A Los Ancestros, Hechiceros Y Resistencia Colonial: El Caso Di Gregorio Taco, Arequipa, 1750 / Luis A. Galdames R. & María Marsilli, Editores.., Maria Marsilli

María Marsilli

This book includes a full-length transcription of a 1751-1754 civil and ecclesiastical investigation against kuraca (native chief) Gregorio Taco, prominent community leader of Andagua, in the province of Arequipa, Peru. The original document can be found at the Archivo Arzobispal de Arequipa (AAA). Taco, a wealthy Indian merchant, was found guilty of practicing ancient Andean rituals, banned as demonic by the colonial church, that included healing, divination, ancestral mummies worshiping, and cult of mountain spirits (wamani). The investigation also revealed that Taco, thanks to these clandestine practices, had created a network of accomplices he used to enhance his social and …

Cartographic Conversation, Jordana Dym

Jordana Dym

In 2012, the John Carter Brown Library celebrated the 50th anniversary of its fellowship program. In addition to organizing a panel for the June 2012 conference celebrating the anniversary, I curated a website of essays by former fellows working with historical cartography as a "Cartographic Conversation" engaging their research questions. My own essay addresses "Coastal Visions."

Twelve For The Price Of One: The Constitution Of Cádiz & Guatemala, Jordana Dym Feb 2012

Twelve For The Price Of One: The Constitution Of Cádiz & Guatemala, Jordana Dym

Jordana Dym

On March 19, 1812, the Spanish Cortes promulgated the Political Constitution of the Spanish Monarchy, often called the Constitution of Cádiz. Two hundred years later, this document—which placed sovereignty “essentially” in the nation (not the king), granted citizenship to all Spaniards of European and American (but not African) origin, and established elected representation for Spain’s mainland and overseas territories at national, provincial and local levels—has received the royal treatment. Spain’s king marked the anniversary at a commemorative ceremony in Cádiz, and scholars interested in the independence of Spanish America are asking what impact it had in conferences from Boston to …

The Indultados Of Tescua: Criminal Rebellion And Judicial Reckoning During The War Of The Supremes, Joshua Rosenthal Dec 2011

The Indultados Of Tescua: Criminal Rebellion And Judicial Reckoning During The War Of The Supremes, Joshua Rosenthal

Joshua M Rosenthal Dr.

In 1841 the public of Bogotá followed the trial of 22 prisoners charged with the crime of rebellion during the War of the Supremes. Captured while serving as officers at the battle of Tescua, the accused claimed they had been forced to serve in the rebel army. This excuse was ignored and 21 of the defendants were sentenced to death, only to be spared by decrees of indulto in the following months. This article examines the logic behind such judicial reckoning, the narrative strategies employed by the accused in their defense, and the meaning of clemency in the early republic.

For many, a map is nothing more than a tool used to determine the location or distribution of something—a country, a city, or a natural resource. But maps reveal much more: to really read a map means to examine what it shows and what it doesn’t, and to ask who made it, why, and for whom. The contributors to this new volume ask these sorts of questions about maps of Latin America, and in doing so illuminate the ways cartography has helped …

El Poder En La Nueva Guatemala: La Disputa Sobre Los Alcaldes De Barrio, 1761-1821, Jordana Dym

Jordana Dym

The Alliance For Progress And Housing Policy In Rio De Janeiro And Buenos Aires In The 1960s, Leandro Benmergui Dec 2008

The Alliance For Progress And Housing Policy In Rio De Janeiro And Buenos Aires In The 1960s, Leandro Benmergui

Leandro Benmergui

This article explores the construction of publicly financed low-income housing complexes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the 1960s. These housing developments were possible thanks to the arrival of foreign economic and technical assistance from the Alliance for Progress. Urban scholars, politicians, diplomats and urbanists of the Americas sought to promote middle-class habits, mass consumption and moderate political behaviour, especially among the poor, by expanding access to homeownership and ‘decent’ living conditions for a burgeoning urban population. As a result, the history of low-income housing should be understood within broader transnational discourses and practices about the …

Visual Tours Of Housing Projects In Buenos Aires And Rio De Janeiro, 1960s And 1970s (Multimedia Companion To The Special Issue: Transnational Urbanism In The Americas), Leandro Benmergui

Leandro Benmergui

The Multimedia Companion for the special issue of Urban History: 'Transnational Urbanism in the Americas', is an editorial project of Urban History’s North American Editorial Board. The emerging transnational paradigm raises many interesting possibilities for the historical study of cities. As the articles in the special issue suggest, transnationalism challenges us to map out the patterns of human life in new ways as they cross and construct cities, nations, and other crucial formations. Even as this new paradigm is causing a fundamental rethinking of our scholarship, the internet and the World Wide Web are also challenging our current modes of …

Citizen Of Which Republic? Foreigners And The Construction Of National Citizenship In Central America, 1823-1845, Jordana Dym

The law of the South American states with reference to nationality of origin remains to be noticed. Sir Alexander Cockburn, Nationality: or, The law relating to subjects and aliens, considered with a view to future legislation (London, W. Ridgway, 1869), 17. In December 1841, voters in Sonsonate (El Salvador) elected Frenchman and long-time resident, Luis Bertrand Save, as their alcalde, or municipal judge, for 1842. The governor insisted that Save accept the office. However, Save convinced El Salvador's president that he should not serve since he was not a citizen of the country, citing French and Salvadoran laws to back …

Politics, Economy And Society In Bourbon Central America, Jordana Dym, Christophe Belaubre

Jordana Dym

Cloth. 320 pages. Illustrations: 4 b/w photos, 1 drawing, 7 maps, 2 tables

Politics, Economy, and Society in Bourbon Central America, 1759-1821 examines how the Spanish policies known broadly as the Bourbon Reforms affected Central American social, economic, and political institutions. Although historians have devoted significant attention to the purpose and impact of these reforms in Spain and some of Spain's other New World colonies, this book is the first to explore their impact on Central America.

These reforms profoundly changed aspects of Central America's politics and society; however, these essays reveal that changes in the region were shaped both …

From Sovereign Villages To National States: City, State And Federation In Central America, 1759-1839, Jordana Dym

Jordana Dym

The role of the city--as an institution, as a political ideal, as a training ground for politicians--has been neglected in historical studies of Spanish American independence. Connecting the political changes of the Bourbon Reforms (1759-1788) and constitutional monarchy (1808-1821) to those of the independence era (1821-1839), Jordana Dym's analysis of Central America's early nineteenth-century politics shows nation-state formation to be a city-driven process that transformed colonial provinces (weak administrative districts with ambiguous political identities and divided interiors) into enduring states with basic governments and articulated national identities. Dym argues that in Central America, an important aspect of the nineteenth-century political …

Mesoamerican Voices: Native-Language Writings From Colonial Mexico And Guatemala, Matthew Restall, Lisa Sousa, Kevin Terraciano

Lisa Sousa

Translated into English, these texts were written from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries by Nahuas from central Mexico, Mixtecs from Oaxaca, Maya from Yucatan, and other groups from Mexico and Guatemala. This collection provides college teachers and students access to important new sources for the history of Latin America and Native Americans. It is the first to present the translated writings of so many native groups and to address such a variety of topics, including conquest, government, land, household, society, gender, religion, writing, law, crime, and morality.

The 'Original Conquest' Of Oaxaca: Nahua And Mixtec Accounts Of The Spanish Conquest, Lisa Sousa, Kevin Terraciano

Lisa Sousa

This article features the transcription, translation, and analysis of two primordial titles, written in the Mixtec and Nahuatl languages, and a large map. Two indigenous communities in the Valley of Oaxaca attempted to lay claim to disputed territory by presenting these competing "titles," ostensibly written in the 1520s, to Spanish authorities in the 1690s. The titles present each community's account of the Spanish Conquest of Oaxaca and subsequent colonial events. We consider how the documents shed light on Mixtec and Nahua ethnic identity and historical memory in the Valley of Oaxaca in the late colonial period.
