The central theme of this text is self-governed naming. I am implementing Black feminist storytelling procedures to write and paint without the “white,” the “male” or the “elitist gaze.” I’m writing an anti-colonial historical narrative about the making of the Puerto Rican people. I am providing to the field of American Studies an Afrocentric narrative–and series of paintings–through an interdisciplinary study of the presence of the African in the Americas. Although many colonial narratives center Spain in histories of Puerto Rico and of Puerto Ricans. The Indigenous Poster Child Of The Lost Cause: An Examination Of The Historiography Of Brigadier General Stand Watie And The Legacy Of Cherokee Confederate Involvement During The Civil War, Corey Cheung

Stand Watie, the only Indian Brigadier general to serve on either side during the Civil War, has a legacy that is intertwined with the problematic beliefs like that of the Lost Cause and his image has undergone a revision that aims to exploit his Indigeneity for the purpose of exalting the wider Confederacy. This paper seeks to examine how the historiography of biographies on Watie contributed to this image that dominates the public imagination and how the effects of this portrayal can be observed in the modern day.

What Should We Do With The Social Construct Of Race?, Jason A. Gordon

Today, race is something that many people still consider to be an essential component of their identities. Even though race has been proven to be nothing more than a social construct, it still is in many regards something that the people living in our society tend take for granted. In this paper, the concept of race will be critically examined and analyzed. The history of race will be closely followed and it will be discussed as to whether or not this social construct is something worth preserving.
