Salman Schocken (1877–1959) was the owner of a multicorparate enterprise and a “businessman with art in his soul” as Felix Rosenblüth (1887–1978) said. His manner to handle money and his success in different fields of publishing and collecting rare books made it possible, that he could help other people in times of need. This article deals with two specific cases of funding an escape and helping to save people’s life during the growing power of the National Socialists in 1930s. Contemporary Americans think of the lobotomy as an utterly primitive and brutal form of psychosurgery. The film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, especially, popularized the image of it as a violent form of suppression and mind control. But when it was first introduced, the procedure was considered compassionate, effective, and so delicate it was compared to “cutting through butter.” The therapeutic effect was described as “cutting out worry.” Between 1936 and 1978 it is estimated that 40,000 psychiatric patients received lobotomies in the United States; the procedure was not only tolerated, it was popular. The prevailing historical accounts of the formation of the U.S. aircraft “patent pool” in 1917 assume the U.S. Government necessarily intervened to alleviate a patent hold-up among private aircraft manufacturers. We show these accounts to be inconsistent with the historical facts. We show that despite the existence of basic aircraft patents, aircraft manufacturers faced no patent barriers in the market dominated by Government demand. We show that the notion of the aircraft patent hold-up is a myth created by Government officials and used to persuade Congress to authorize eminent domain condemnation of basic aircraft patents. In 2005, seven European countries signed the so-called Prüm Treaty to increase transnational collaboration in combating international crime, terrorism and illegal immigration. Three years later, the Treaty was adopted into EU law. EU member countries were now obliged to have systems in place to allow authorities of other member states access to nationally held data on DNA, fingerprints, and vehicles by August 2011. In this paper, we discuss the conditions of possibility for the Prüm network to emerge, and argue that rather than a linear ascent towards technological and political convergence and harmonisation, the (hi)story of Prüm is heterogeneous and …

Resumen En el Tossal de les Basses (Alicante), y para final de época islámica (en los siglos XII-XIII), se documenta un asentamiento, con algunos enterramientos, así como dos hornos cerámicos con sus testares. Se trataría de una pequeña alquería dedicada, básicamente, a la fabricación de distintas producciones cerámicas que distribuirían a través de la medina Laqant. Hemos podido, además, documentar un horno, con distintas reparaciones, y la rotura definitiva del mismo. This article argues that the theoretical perspective on the rise and decline of states developed by 'Abd al-Rahman Ibn Khaldiin (723-808 AH/1332-1406 AD) should not be confined to historical interest but is of relevance for the study of various aspects of the history of Muslim societies. The reasons for the relative neglect or mar- ginalization of Ibn Khaldun as a source of theory to be applied to definite historical empirical situations is partly due to the predominance of Eurocentrism in the social sciences. This review is focused on a central question: why should a social thinker like Ibn Khaldu¯ n be excluded from the serious study of the history of sociology, sociological theory or historical sociology? A quick review of contemporary histories of social thought and social theory will reveal that very little attention is given to non-western precursors of sociology or non-western social thinkers who were contemporaneous with the European founders of the discipline. Nineteenth- and early 20th-century western sociologists, on the other hand, were more aware of the role of non-western thought in the development of western sociology as a discipline. …
