The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
Within four hours of Richard Dunphy’s grievous wounding at the Battle of Mobile Bay, both of his arms had been amputated. In a medical survey, he described the “extraordinary pain” that lasted “for about three weeks.” There was “a great quantity of pus, and twelve pieces of bone or splinters came out” from the wound for months after the surgery. Though the pain was great, it faded in time. The psychological and social effects of the operation, however, never went away. [excerpt]

Abdominal intercostal hernia (AIH) is uncommonly reported in the literature with only 20 cases reported to date.1–3 We report a case of a delayed incarcerated AIH secondary to blunt trauma from a motor vehicle accident in which the colon and diaphragm herniated through an associated chest defect that was repaired successfully through a transabdominal approach using primary repair of the defect in combination with onlay porcine patch reinforcement.

According to Roman scripture, it was Celsus who attempted the first inguinal hernia repair in history during the first century A.D. His attempts were unsuccessful and resulted in an early recurrence of the hernia, which eventually led to the patient’s death.1 Over the next two millennia, little understanding was gained regarding the anatomy of the inguinal canal. It was only in the last 100 years that major advancements in herniorrhaphy were established, thanks in large part to the work of Edoardo Bassini, who revolutionized the surgical treatment of the inguinal hernia with a technique which has become the basis of …

If you were, are, or will become a student, then you have probably thought about doodling during class. Fear not! We are not the only generation to draw in the midst of a lecture. Today’s research escapade led me to investigate George Currier’s notes from his time as a student at the Medical Department of Pennsylvania College. [excerpt]

This paper is an exploration into the historian as an independent source of history. Homer T. Rosenberger was an amateur historian in Pennsylvania during the better part of the 20th century. His works on Pennsylvania history, early American history, and contemporary historical events are valuable, if unknown, resources in those fields. However, Rosenberger becomes his own source of history when his battle with cancer is examined in the context of the American 1950's. Rosenberger's reactions to his plight help illustrate the mindset American brought to cancer in the 1950's and the transition in American society since then.

This exhibit will open to the public in February 2014, but until then I have my work cut out for me. I am currently researching various aspects of medical history spanning from the mid-1800s, through the Civil War, to WWI. Thus far I have read accounts of women volunteers during the American Civil War, important changes that went into effect during WWI, and an overly detailed description on how to perform tooth extractions according to the latest science of the 1860s. Dr. Samuel Gross' contributions to the field of surgery are well known and range from numerous clinical advances to pioneering scholarship and professional activities. Dr. Gross was ceaselessly ambitious and even remarked in his autobiography that his ‘‘conviction has always been that is far better for a man to wear out than to rust out.’’1 It is through this frame of motivation that Dr. Gross lived his life.

The Politics Of The "New North": Putting History And Geography At Stake In Arctic Futures, Andrew T. Stuhl
The Politics Of The "New North": Putting History And Geography At Stake In Arctic Futures, Andrew T. Stuhl
Faculty Journal Articles
References to a “New North” have snowballed across popular media in the past
10 years. By invoking the phrase, scientists, policy analysts, journalists and others
draw attention to the collision of global warming and global investment in
the Arctic today and project a variety of futures for the region and the planet.
While changes are apparent, the trope of a “New North” is not new. Discourses
that appraised unfamiliar situations at the top of the world have recurred
throughout the twentieth century. They have also accompanied attempts to
cajole, conquer, civilize, consume, conserve and capitalize upon the far north.

Euler And The Ongoing Search For Odd Perfect Numbers, Brian D. Beasley
Euler And The Ongoing Search For Odd Perfect Numbers, Brian D. Beasley
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2013
Leonhard Euler, after proving that every even perfect number has the form given by Euclid, turned his attention to finding odd perfect numbers. Euler established a basic factorization pattern that every odd perfect number must have, and mathematicians have expanded upon this Eulerian form ever since. This paper will present a brief summary of Euler’s result and some recent generalizations. It will also note connections between odd perfect numbers and the abundancy index (the abundancy index of a positive integer is the ratio of the sum of its positive divisors to itself). In particular, finding a positive integer with an …

Forming The Analytical Society At Cambridge University, Richard Stout
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2013
The Analytical Society, an organization begun by students at Cambridge, was founded in 1812. Even though it was entirely student-led, the society was responsible for significant changes in the Cambridge mathematics curriculum and in the way mathematics was perceived in Britain throughout the nineteenth century. Its success was likely due to the outstanding students who formed the group, some of whom went on to become leaders in British science and mathematics for the next fifty years. In this paper we will briefly look at several of those who played important roles in forming and leading the society and we will …

Leading A Successful Missions Trip In Your Discipline, Tom Nurkkala, Darci Nurkkala
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2013
The global missions community goes wanting for skilled workers in almost every discipline. However, even students at a Christian institution that emphasizes global engagement remain largely unaware of the impact they can make in missions by leveraging their own academic specialty. In this paper, we draw on our experience leading discipline-specific missions trips as a means to encourage students to reframe their thinking about personal involvement in missions. We discuss the need for students to experience missions firsthand, and the student outcomes we have observed in intercultural awareness and spiritual formation. A key student outcome is an increased willingness to …

Reading Assignments And Assessments: Are Your Students Reading Math Texts Before Class, After Class, Both, Or Neither?, David Klanderman, Mandi Maxwell, Sharon Robbert, Bill Boerman-Cornell
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2013
In his recent book What the Best College Students Do [Bain, 2012], Ken Bain defines a number of different types of students including “surface learners,” “strategic learners,” “routine experts,” and finally, “deep learners.” In our mathematics courses at Trinity, we have found examples of all of these student types. A major determinant of their preferred approach to learning appears to be the ways and degrees to which mathematical texts and other written materials are read prior to class sessions. Each full-time member of the department both assigns and assesses the reading of mathematical materials prior to class sessions. Assessment methods, …
