In 1740, Rev. George Whitefield (1714-1770), probably the most famous religious figure of the eighteenth century, passed through what is now Horry County, S.C. Whitefield was an English Anglican cleric and evangelist who was one of the founders of Methodism and the evangelical movement. The spiritual revival he ignited, the Great Awakening, became one of the most formative events in American history. This article contains two entries from his diary, written as he travelled along the coastline in the vicinity of present-day Myrtle Beach.
