Reshaping The Historical Narrative: Muslims In North Africa, Mariam Sultan
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
Immigration of diverse peoples to America has been continuous since the 16th century, especially in regards to Muslims, who have been an understudied and underrepresented group in historical literature, despite constituting a major faction of the first peoples in this country. The study reinforces why Muslims should be part of the historic narrative including the many contributions they made to the growth and development of the United States, and more broadly, the North American continent.

French Jewish Citizenship Of The Late 18th To Early 19th Century, Jourdin Wilson
French Jewish Citizenship Of The Late 18th To Early 19th Century, Jourdin Wilson
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
Results show that regions/origins influenced how French Jews felt about their citizenship, and how they were treated: (1) “The Jews of Bordeaux and Bayonne enjoyed the most advantageous legal status,” who had “Marrano origins” and acted as Portuguese merchants, made up Sephardi Jews in France (Hyman 1998, “Chapter One”). (2) Napoleon’s methods greatly influenced Jews’ citizenship. Limitations: finding English translations, understanding anti-Semitism. Future Research: (1) Findings suggest that researching particular groups or regions of French Jews leads to more varied and nuanced perspectives, rather than generalizing. (2) Choosing a region and study a particular community of Jews in France.

Through the sources, students can become familiar with the spaces that Jews frequented, their daily practices and rituals, and their thinking. The subject matter ranges from culinary preferences and even details of sexual lives, to garments, objects, and communal buildings. The documents testify to how Jews enacted …

Life Is Beautiful, Or Not: The Myth Of The Good Italian, Shira Klein
Life Is Beautiful, Or Not: The Myth Of The Good Italian, Shira Klein
History Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"Life is Beautiful illustrates a popular misconception about Italy's role in the Holocaust. The film features the good Italian and the warped view that Italy treated Jews kindly in the late 1930s and during World War II. Historians have proven this claim to be grossly exaggerated, arguing that Italians persecuted Jews vigorously. Yet popular representations of the past-films, novels, museum exhibits, and websites-continue to give credence to the notion that Italians were overwhelmingly good to Jews. Although France and Germany cultivated similar self-acquitting myths in the decades immediately after the war, they eventually moved on to accept the more …

Inward Baptism: The Theological Origins Of Evangelicalism, Baird L. Tipson
Inward Baptism: The Theological Origins Of Evangelicalism, Baird L. Tipson
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
Inward Baptism analyses the theological developments that led to the great evangelical revivals of the mid-eighteenth century. Baird Tipson here demonstrates how the rationale for the "new birth," the characteristic and indispensable evangelical experience, developed slowly but inevitably from Luther's critique of late medieval Christianity.
Addressing the great indulgence campaigns of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, Luther's perspective on sacramental baptism, as well as the confrontation between Lutheran and Reformed theologians who fastened on to different aspects of Luther's teaching, Tipson sheds light on how these disparate historical moments collectively created space for evangelicalism.
This leads to an …

Secularism In The Arab World: Contexts, Ideas And Consequences, Aziz Al-Azmeh, David Bond
Secularism In The Arab World: Contexts, Ideas And Consequences, Aziz Al-Azmeh, David Bond
In Translation: Modern Muslim Thinkers
Explores secularism and secularisation in Arab societies since the mid-19th century.
This book is a translation of Aziz al-Azmeh’s seminal work Al-'Ilmaniya min mandhur mukhtalif that was first published in Beirut in 1992. Both celebrated and criticised for its reflections on Arab secularisation and secularism in the modern history of the Arab World, it is the only study to date to approach its subject as a set of historical changes which affected the regulation of the social, political and cultural order, and which permeated the concrete workings of society, rather than as an ideological discussion framed from the outset by …
