"The Italian Hokey-Pokey Man And His Immoral Ice Cream" : Food, Identity And British Xenophobia, 1850-1914, Andrea Camillo

This paper examines the British reaction to the foodways Italian ice cream men brought to the United Kingdom in the second half of the nineteenth century. While ice cream became popular among the working class, for others it became _a source of xenophobic response. It is here where this paper will argue that the slow acceptance of ethnic foods and the changing approaches to public eating reveal the deeper divisions of society's moral and social codes.
