Nebraska Tractor Tests

The Nebraska Tractor Law known as House Roll 85, 37th session, which became effective July 15, 1919, was enacted to encourage the manufacture and sale of imporved types of tractors and to contribute to a more successful use of the tractor for farming.

It was thought that the best method of accomplishing these objects would be to require a tractor of each model sold in the State to be tested at the State University and to have the results of these tests made public. These tests will give reliable information on the power capacity and fuel consumtion of each tractor …

In accordance with the Smith-Hughes Act, North Hall is being used as a practice house for the Home Economics seniors. The Smith-Hughes Act was enacted in 1917, providing federal aid to states to promote pre-collegiate vocational education in agricultural and industrial trades and in home economics.

Photograph of two Black students Samuel and Roger Courtney tarred and feathered While at the time this incident was described as "hazing" incident carried out by University of Maine a modern interpretation, by scholars such as Karen Sieber, Humanities Specialist at the McGillicuddy Humanities Center, was that this was actually a racist attack.

Sieber has featured this incident in her, Visualizing the Red Summer database and archive on the topic of the Red Summer of 1919, a term given to a nationwide wave of violence against African Americans that year.

The object of these rules, instructions and data is to make all tractor demonstrations of this kind comparable and of the greatest educational value. Anyone who has conducted tractor demonstrations in the past has realized the necessity of some standard rules to follow and those who afterwards have referred to the results, deplore the lack of uniformity in the demonstrations and the data. For those who have not had this experience will find that it is a great help to have satisfactory rules to follow.
