Scholars have offered many conflicting interpretations of the Japanese Meiji Restoration of 1868, but few have put forth a comprehensive analysis as to the nature of the protagonists and the motivation of those who initiated this revolutionary movement. Although historical interpretations of the Restoration and its heroes have ranged from a romantic and generalized theory of economic struggle to focused studies of individuals whose motivations were singular, the true character of the samurai revolutionaries behind the Restoration is the issue here. Explores the representation of nuclear weapons in Japanese anime and US live action cinema in the 1980's, using methods from cultural studies. Examines, specifically, the silences and contradictions of the selected films to reveal the cultural ideologies of Japan and the United States during the time in which the films were produced. Analyzes the Japanese animated films, Barefoot Gen, Barefoot Gen 2, and Grave of the Fireflies, and the American live action films, The Day After, Testament, and Miracle Mile.

Laurence Bernard-Pradelle’s Leonardo Bruni Aretino: Histoire, e´loquence et poe´sie a` Florence au de´but du Quattrocento seeks to broaden Bruni’s appeal among readers of French. Toward this end, the book offers an extensive introduction to the life and works of Leonardo Bruni. It also includes new Latin editions of several of Bruni’s shorter works with facing-page French translations. The book concludes with a lengthy bibliography. The volume’s primary interest for readers of English will be Bernard-Pradelle’s detailed and learned analysis of Bruni’s sources for the texts published in the volume

The Winding Stair Restaurant is located at 40, Lower Ormond Quay Dublin on the north side of the river Liffey beside the Ha’penny Bridge. The proprietor is Elaine Murphy. The Winding Stair started life as a bookshop and café which was a popular meeting spot in Dublin during the 1970s and 1980s. The café closed in 2005 and in 2006 the current proprietor re-opened it as a restaurant.
