Dr. Frank C. Laubach, missionary and adult educator, dedicated his life to the cause of literacy for development and world peace. In addition, he founded or helped found four literacy organizations, including Laubach Literacy International; wrote forty books on adult education, Christian religion, world politics, and culture; and co-authored literacy primers in more than 300 languages. He was awarded four honorary doctorates—one of them from Syracuse University.

Buddhist Commons In Asia, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Although nothing precisely like the modern nonprofit organization, voluntary association or foundation existed in Asia prior to the 20th century, there can be little doubt that some types of similar indigenous activities are found deep in the history of the many cultures of Asia. Buddhism, for example, has a long record of organized activity, beliefs about giving, and other evidences of what might be termed Buddhist philanthropy.

Left And Right: Investigating A Scientific Claim, Henry G. Schwarz

History Faculty and Staff Publications

It has long been known in the field of neurophysiology that specific activities are controlled in specific parts of the brain. It has been furthermore widely believed that the brain's left hemisphere is the main, if not exclusive, language center, controlling such activities as speech and writing with the right hand, while the right hemisphere controls such activities as smell, spatial construction, and nonverbal ideation. However, this article concludes that the claim of a universal dichotomy of "right/wrong" in languages is false and that these allegedly universal connotations are not present in the languages of East and Central Asia.

The Origins Of The Department Of Defense Recommendation To Cross The 38th Parallel During The Korean War, Wayne A. Kirkbride

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This thesis considers the reasons the Department of Defense (DOD) developed its recommendation concerning the U.S. involvement in the Korean War. The United states initially committed its forces to restore the status quo antebellum. However, by 31 July 1950, the DOD recommended that a free, unified, and representative Korea should be the policy object of the war and that the occupation of all of Korea and the defeat of the North Korean armed forces north and south of the 38th Parallel should be the military objectives.

Several factors contributed to the recommendation of a change in policy and strategy. A …

Vietnam In Turmoil : The Japanese Coup, The Oss, And The August Revolution In 1945, Edward Tayloe Wise

Master's Theses

World War II brought about the demise of colonialism. The Japanese overthrew the French Indochinese government in March 1945. Their establishment of a puppet government encouraged the Vietnamese to seek independence. Ho Chi Minh, who had a Communist background, was ready to lead his nation, and was assisted in that undertaking by the United States Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor of the Central Intelligence Agency. This work explores Ho Chi Minh's nationalist and Communist background along with the role that the OSS played in his rise to power in 1945.

Primary sources include U.S. Government documents and many …

A Change In Dynasties: Loyalism In Thirteenth-Century China, Jennifer W. Jay Jan 1991

A Change In Dynasties: Loyalism In Thirteenth-Century China, Jennifer W. Jay

East Asian Studies Press

A Change in Dynasties: Jennifer W. Jay’s book challenges standard Chinese historiography which sees Song loyalists as totally uncompromising to the new Mongol government. Professor Jay’s book marshals an impressive range of evidence to prove that after the defeat of loyalist resistance in 1279, even among the exemplars accommodation was more often the case than resistance. This important new study demonstrates that Song loyalism can best be understood in terms of a spectrum of relative rather than absolute values.
