At the request of the Texas Department of Transportation, Environmental Affairs Division (TxDOT-ENV), the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) conducted archeological significance testing at 41ZV202, a prehistoric site located in northwestern Zavala County, in March of 2003. The work, conducted under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 3071 issued to Dr. Steven A. Tomka, was done in anticipation of the potential widening by TxDOT of FM 481. Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Between April 1981 and December 1982, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) personnel conducted archeological fieldwork along an approximately 13-km segment of FM 481 in northwest Zavala County. The work was part of an evaluation of the impacts of road improvements to a series of sites along the right-of-way. All of the sites but one (41ZV202) were found not to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and not to warrant designations as State Archeological Landmarks. At the request of Ozuna and Associates, Inc., Consulting Engineers of San Antonio, Texas, an archaeological survey was conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) for a proposed 40-acre extension to the Crystal City Municipal Landfill, under Texas Antiquities Committee Archeology Permit Number 2298. The pedestrian survey was conducted in early January 2000. One prehistoric site (41ZV445), a sparse scatter of burned stone and chipped lithics, was identified and documented. Shovel testing revealed no subsurface cultural deposits. The site does not meet the criteria for potential eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places nor does it warrant State …

During 1981 and 1982, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted a cultural resources assessment of ca. 30,000 acres leased to the Carter Mining Company in Uvalde and Zavala Counties, Texas. Known as the East Chacon project, the survey was undertaken to identify and assess the cultural resources of the locality prior to potential modification or destruction due to proposed mining operations. Archaeological and historical sites (149) were identified and recorded that represent a span of human activities from approximately 11,000 B.P. to the Historic period. The Chaparrosa Ranch, located in Zavala County, southern Texas constitutes an ideal area for long-range archaeological research. Flowing' through the ranch are Chaparrosa and Turkey Creeks, two major tributaries in the Nueces River system. These creeks and subsidiary drainages have cut pronounced valleys and terrace systems. As of this writing, nearly 200 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites have been documented in these valleys and in the adjacent uplands. Field work at several known sites in the Chaparrosa Ranch was conducted in August and September 1970, and the results are found in the first paper in this volume.
