Although not related to the Wister Family by blood, Fanny Kemble was the mother-in-law of Owen Jones Wister and grandmother of acclaimed novelist Owen Wister. An actress and writer by profession, Fanny believed that it was her identity as an English citizen that turned her into a fervent abolitionist and viewing the horrors of slavery firsthand. Visiting a Georgia plantation owned by slave-owning husband, Pierce Butler, Fanny was shocked and appalled at the living conditions that the enslaved people endured. Determined to make their lives better, Fanny established a hospital and nursery for enslaved people on the plantation and taught …

The Civil War Diary Of Sarah Butler Wister, Dezlen Long

From April 15, 1861, to September 4, 1861, Sarah Butler Wister, daughter of actress Fanny Kemble and member of the Wister family, kept a diary that detailed the events of the Civil War and her views on the matter. Over the course of the five-month long diary, Sarah introduces a multitude of people connected to both her personal life and the ongoing war while keeping track of the war’s events and the news cycles that soon followed. While the diary ends abruptly, we know that years later excerpts from it were published with the diarist’s permission by her mother.

Anthony Benezet scoured the available English literature of colonial exploitation for evidence of the humanity of the trafficked Africans and the inhumanity of the European traders in human beings. He compiled and published this Short Account in 1762 to present the case for termination of the trans-Atlantic transportation of kidnapped Africans, for abolition of slavery and the slave trade, and for emancipation of the enslaved persons held in bondage in North America and elsewhere. The Principles of Social Freedom was delivered to a packed New York City audience in 1871. Community Resilience In Vermont After The 2023 Flooding Event, Alex Poniz

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Between July 10th-11th 2023 Vermont experienced catastrophic flooding after receiving prolonged heavy rainfall of up to 9” over 48 hrs. Damage from the 2023 event rivals the historic destruction of Hurricane Irene in 2011 and is exceeded only by the Great Vermont Flood of 1927, an event predating modern flood controls. We collected oral histories from Vermonters to better understand their lived experience of the flood and its impacts, and identifed common themes related to community and individual resilience.

Autobiography Of George Washington Owens: First African American Graduate Of Kansas State University, Anthony R. Crawford

George Washington Owens was the son of former slaves who migrated to Kansas in the early 1870s to find free land, finally settling in Wabaunsee County, Kansas, near Alma. It was there that he was born in 1875. In his handwritten autobiography, Owens chronicles the difficulties and successes of working hard growing up on the plains and as a student at District School #3 of Alma, and then at Kansas State Agricultural College. After learning that no African American had graduated from KSAC (now Kansas State University), “he resolved to be the first.” He did so, graduating in 1899. Owens …

John D. Rentz’s Civil War diary chronicles the time he spent with the 96th Pennsylvania Infantry between December 26, 1863, and September 6, 1864. The diary details a wide array of information pertaining to his life with the regiment and the progress of the Civil War.

Rentz’s pension letter is very simple, merely asking for B. Penrose’s assistance with securing a renewal of his pension. The “Rebel letter” written by Margaret Jones to Joseph King is also simple, providing a few details about the rainy weather, the progress of the crops, and expressing Jones’s desire to see her brother.
