Lang And Lee: Two Views Of The Great Depression, Steven M. Gelber
History
During the 1930s, America was the subject of American art. The European expressionism that had influenced so many artists through the 1920s was unceremoniously abandoned in favor of domestic realism. Creative people in all the arts adopted the theme. Virgil Thomson's music and Martha Graham's dance joined the novels of John Dos Passos and the plays of Thornton Wilder in an across-the-board celebration of America, past and present.
Domestic realism, as an artistic style, could take two distinct forms. · On the one hand there was the "documentary style" that sought to illustrate the country's troubles as a first step …

William Halsey Wood And The Competition For The Cathedral Of St. John The Divine, Gayle Evans Brookfield
William Halsey Wood And The Competition For The Cathedral Of St. John The Divine, Gayle Evans Brookfield
Wayne State University Theses
In the spring of 1888, the Trustees of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine gave a young Newark architect a splendid opportunity. Along with thirteen other architects, William Halsey Wood was invited to participate in the largest and most important architectural competition in America, If he won, Wood would have a "chance to immortalize himself" in his design for a Protestant Episcopal Cathedral in New York City. The competition, however, was stiff. As many as one hundred architects may have submitted plans and their work evinces the eclecticism of late nineteenth century American architecture. Wood's scheme, nevertheless, was singular, …
Post Object Art And Sociological Influences On The Internal Processes Of Art Making, Steve Havens
Post Object Art And Sociological Influences On The Internal Processes Of Art Making, Steve Havens
Masters Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss how external sociological factors inevitably have a profound effect on current art.
Much great art has been created against the flow of what is critically "popular" or "fashionable," but as these external factors become more prominent so the art work produced inevitably suffers.
The exhibition of Frank Stella's black and aluminum paintings at the turn of the 60's, in my own opinion, provided something of a landmark in the history of art. These works, in all their stark, flat, geometric nakedness denied both "form" and "content." They bare no illusions, no mythology, …

Masters Theses
In 1968 an exhibition entitled "Realism Now" was held at Vassar College under the direction of Linda Nochlin, a noted art historian and professor at the school. The exhibition sought to present a cross-view of recent American painting in the realistic mode. Included in the catalog were twenty-five artists including Jack Beal, Robert Bechtle, Richard Estes, Alex Katz, Alfred Leslie, Malcom Morely and Philip Pearlstein, as well as many other artists who, at the time, were relatively unknown. The exhibition generated a great deal of attention, not only because of its recognition of contemporary representational painting as an influential movement, …

The newspaper comic strip was well established in the United States by World War I. It had become a part of every American's cultural background long before the Disney cartoon films of the 1930s. The George Arents Research Library for Special Collections at Syracuse University has a large collection of original drawings for comic strips. There are cartoons from the early days of the comic strip to the work of artists still drawing strips which many Americans read every day.
Some of the comic strips have extraordinary lives, continuing past their creator's lifetimes. Buzz Sawyer and his friend Roscoe Sweeney …
