Holponiyochi: Contemporary Native American Sculpture, Wright State University Art Galleries

Exhibition and Program Catalogs

Nine artists participating in this exhibition share a concern with how practices of visual representation work to construct individual and collective identity. They examine and then reformulate familiar codes of visual culture, turning established conventions of visual representation against themselves. In highly sophisticated and nuanced critical commentary, they explore how both individual and group identities are shaped in and by one's cultural environment. At the same time, they recognize that limiting understanding can be an equally powerful influence in the shaping of one's sense of self and community.

Taking In: The Best Of Aib Photography 2003, Aib Students

Taking In

Welcome to the first edition of Taking In: the best of aib photography. During this first year Taking In has gone through many twists and turns in order to publish a professional portfolio representing the quality work produced by students at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Along with the portfolio there will be a gallery opening this Fall presenting all of the published pieces in a professional setting. Our intention is to bridge the gap between student creations and the greater art community through publication. The number of entries for our first publication were more than …

Content And Meaning In Abstract Animation, Pamela Turner Jan 2003

Content And Meaning In Abstract Animation, Pamela Turner

Kinetic Imaging Publications and Presentations

Talking about the content and meaning of abstract animation, for the practitioner or enthusiast, is like discussing why one eats chocolate or why we stand at the edge of the ocean, experiencing the sensation of the sand being sucked out from under our feet by the pull of the receding wave. Or why listening to a beautiful adagio can create such a stirring response. These experiences stand for themselves and need no explanation.

For the uninitiated, or the viewer who has little to no encounter with abstract animation, however, these moving images can be initially disconcerting and hard to understand. …

John Dos Passos and His World

September 26 to December 07, 2003

Marsh Art Gallery, University of Richmond Museums

Introduction

One of America's most innovative writers, John Dos Passos (1896-1970) also completed more than four hundred paintings and drawings that chronicle his life's journeys. In fifty years, Dos Passos wrote forty-two literary works, and his novels Manhattan Transfer (1925) and the trilogy U.S.A. (published together in 1938) provide a panoramic social history of the first three decades of the twentieth century. Similarly, his paintings captured the times in which he lived and addressed the world around him, in landscapes from …

As The Ravens Watch: Exploring The Oracle, Kathryn Lavender Hunter Jan 2003

As The Ravens Watch: Exploring The Oracle, Kathryn Lavender Hunter

LSU Master's Theses

I believe in the process in which the artist never works alone but always in collaboration with the elements of chance. As an artist I live and work everyday collaborating with chance, from reading my cards to creating ethereal birds. As I sew pieces together, the thread becomes another element of the image by chance, stitches to lines, lines to pattern. Chance leads the birds to portraying their own personality as they are each created, one’s head tilts to the right while another sits tall with dignity. This work is about the connection to the subconscious, my connection to it …

Bathroom Issues, Craig Edward Clifford Jan 2003

Bathroom Issues, Craig Edward Clifford

LSU Master's Theses

"Obscenity is a human manifestation. The toilet has no central nervous system. No level of consciousness. It is not aware; it is a dumb toilet; it cannot be obscene; it's impossible." Lenny Bruce How to Talk Dirty and Influence People Things that make people uncomfortable intrigue me and I find that these same things are very ones that make us laugh the hardest. The fact that sex and bodily functions both make people laugh in addition to making them feel uncomfortable is no accident.

Facing Nature, Facing Paint, Emily Jane Ritchey Jan 2003

Accelerate Into The Accident, Jeffey D. Hill Jan 2003

Accelerate Into The Accident, Jeffey D. Hill

LSU Master's Theses

The installation uses purely steel to describe the organic and chaotic nature of thought processes. It looks for a way to confront grief and anxiety. The procedure's purpose is to understand abstract, emotional thinking in immediate, familiar physical terms. By examining each fine strand, either steel rod or line of thought, I attempt to revel in the overwhelming complexity and irrefutable beauty of the mind. It is not a strategy to control mental imbalance. It is rather a humble acceptance of the organic chaos of thought.
