How To Help When It Hurts? Think Systemic, Corey L. Wrenn Ph.D. Oct 2019

How To Help When It Hurts? Think Systemic, Corey L. Wrenn Ph.D.

Corey Lee Wrenn, PhD

To resolve a moral dilemma created by the rescue of carnivorous species from exploitative situations who must rely on the flesh of other vulnerable species to survive, Cheryl Abbate applies the guardianship principle in proposing hunting as a case-by-case means of reducing harm to the rescued animal as well as to those animals who must die to supply food. This article counters that Abbate’s guardianship principle is insufficiently applied given its objectification of deer communities. Tom Regan, alternatively, encouraged guardians to think beyond individual dilemmas and adopt a measure of systemic reconstruction, that being the abolition of speciesist institutions (The …

11_18_2018 The Nexus Of Northwest Arkansas - Thesis By Chuck Davis.Pdf, Chuck Davis

Chuck Davis

My photographs are about power and place. Situated by context to a bygone era, Northwest Arkansas is now the illogical home of the world’s largest company.  Attendant economic and sociological forces are changing this rural area rapidly, as I examine effects upon the region and its residents – historical, contemporary, and transient.
With a narrative, neo-journalistic voice, I seek to convey new complexities to the state of Arkansas and specifically its northwest region. Postcards and placards react and reverse the popular shibboleth of a slow, rural sociotype – the Southern man, woman and family – which is at odds with …

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway Jun 2018

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway

Steven W Holloway

The successful “invasion” of ancient Mesopotamia by explorers in the pay of the British Museum Trustees resulted in best-selling publications, a treasure-trove of Assyrian antiquities for display purposes and scholarly excavation, and a remarkable boost to the quest for confirmation of the literal truth of the Bible. The public registered its delight with the findings through the turnstyle- twirling appeal of the British Museum exhibits, and a series of appropriations of Assyrian art motifs and narratives in popular culture - jewelry, bookends, clocks, fine arts, theater productions, and a walk-through Assyrian palace among other period mansions at the Sydenham Crystal …

Assur Is King Of Persia: Illustrations Of The Book Of Esther In Some Nineteenth-Century Sources, Steven W. Holloway

Steven W Holloway

The marriage of archaeological referencing and picture Bibles in the nineteenth century resulted in an astonishing variety of guises worn by the court of Ahasuerus in Esther. Following the exhibition of Neo-Assyrian sculpture in the British Museum and the wide circulation of such images in various John Murray publications, British illustrators like Henry Anelay defaulted to Assyrian models for kings and rulers in the Old Testament, including the principal actors in Esther, even though authentic Achaemenid Persian art had been available for illustrative pastiche for decades. This curious adoptive choice echoed British national pride in its splendid British Museum collection …

Picturing New Orleans: Collective Memory Images And Visual Thinking, Dana S. Thompson May 2018

Picturing New Orleans: Collective Memory Images And Visual Thinking, Dana S. Thompson

Dana Statton Thompson

New Orleans has always been a city filled with a mix of cultures, creating a vibrant art community and subsequent detailed visual historical record throughout its 300 year history. This program will explore, from the French and Spanish influences to Mardi Gras and Hurricane Katrina, from well-known and less-known artists, how New Orleans was and is represented through images. In this program we will rediscover New Orleans, exploring how images have contributed to the formation of New Orleans’ image and informed our own conception of the city and its place in the South.

The Seven Works of Mercy by the artist, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, is the result of intellectual and social relationships related to the informational exchange surrounding the developments of early modern science. Status quo dictates that the Colonna family were Caravaggio’s primary protectors during his years in exile. However, new evidence supports a more complex history which includes a network of aristocratic intellectuals in Rome and Naples who were associated with the epistemic changes in early modern science and who also contributed to Caravaggio’s success in exile. Despite Caravaggio’s exposure to emerging scientific theories through these networks, his art …

From Here To There, Dana Statton Nov 2017

From Here To There, Dana Statton

Dana Statton Thompson

The photographs in the series From Here to There are not a description of a place; instead, the images are about engaging in a particular type of looking. Elements of “here” and “time” are included in the work; by photographing a moment that will never exist again, transitory objects are imbued with importance. A tree branch drifts, a puddle evaporates, and light shifts, slowly, but immediately. In the midst of this change, my photographs represent specific moments. Integral to the work is the act of finding the photograph, as is the act of framing, taking, and making the photograph. Each …
