“87% Missing”: Preserving Video Game History In A Canadian Copyright Context, Amelia Clarkson, Magnus Berg

Digital Initiatives Symposium

In 2020, the University of Toronto Mississauga campus library acquired the largest collection of video games in Canada from prolific collector Syd Bolton, whose vision was for it to not only be preserved but also playable and publicly accessible. Over the past three years, the collections team has been processing the collection to facilitate access onsite, and in 2024 aims to begin the next step of digitally preserving the collection. In the summer of 2023, the Video Game History Foundation and the Software Preservation Network co-authored a report on the dire state of availability of classic games, with the goal …

So It Goes: Hauntology, Lost Futures, And Mac Miller, Ryan Hiemenz Jan 2023

So It Goes: Hauntology, Lost Futures, And Mac Miller, Ryan Hiemenz

Capstone Showcase

Hauntology is a relatively new concept born out of the current state of late capitalism, wherein it has become increasingly common for new releases of popular culture, art, and media to appease the societal desire to return to the past. First coined by Jacques Derrida in his book Specters of Marx, the term “Hauntology” was used to describe the phenomenon of the “death” of communism and how the capitalist powers that “killed” it essentially made the idea of communism immortal. They made it a specter, and ghosts cannot die. This concept was then altered by the late Mark Fisher, …

The Manipulation Of Female Participants: Onision And Participatory Culture Theory, Isabelle Manetta Jan 2023

The Manipulation Of Female Participants: Onision And Participatory Culture Theory, Isabelle Manetta

Capstone Showcase

With the rise of the Internet and constant sharing comes new ways of interacting with people both as audience members and content creators. Because of this, it has now become increasingly easier to connect with and manipulate people through a screen, especially if one is in a position of power of the other—such as a creator and an audience participant. This paper takes a look into a content creator and his manipulation of certain audience members and the ways in which these audience members were made vulnerable. To do this, first there must be a breakdown of the theory in …

This Is Not An Exit: Abjection And Identity In American Psycho, Danita Mapes Jan 2023

This Is Not An Exit: Abjection And Identity In American Psycho, Danita Mapes

Capstone Showcase

This paper delves into the multifaceted exploration of Patrick Bateman's psyche in the film 'American Psycho' (2000) through the lens of the gaze. By dissecting the cinematic representation of Bateman's abjection, dejection, and his insatiable desire to possess the abject, this analysis reveals how the movie employs visual and thematic elements to exemplify his abject status. Furthermore, it underscores the film's portrayal of Bateman's quest to transcend the constraints of his privileged position, which ultimately destabilizes him due to his lack of a coherent identity.

Throughout the film, Patrick Bateman emerges as a character who is both eroticized and humiliated. …

“Try Getting A Reservation At Dorsia Now, You Fucking Stupid Bastard!” Hegemonic Masculinity In Slasher Films, Samantha Jackson

Capstone Showcase

This thesis aims to analyze and address the prevalence of hegemonic masculinity in the slasher subgenre of horror films. The research consisted of a content analysis of what the internet deemed the ‘best’ ten slasher films of all time. The content analysis was based upon R.W. Connell’s (2005) theory of hegemonic masculinity which stated the existence of hierarchical standards for masculinity that men are expected to achieve. Hegemonic masculinity was categorized into four themes. The themes were sexist ideology, sexual behavior, and physical and emotional violence. The research indicated that emotional violence occurred at the highest rate among the sample …

Women Play Football Too: Feminist Theory And Uk Football, Mikayla Kummer Jan 2023

Women Play Football Too: Feminist Theory And Uk Football, Mikayla Kummer

Capstone Showcase

Women's Football in the UK has constantly overshadowed by Men's Football and with the popularity of social media it may have complicated the issue. The way women have been treated in the media has always been different to how men were treated. Gender can be considered a performance and how women are treated by the press demands a performance from them. Through Offside, a play by Hollie Poetry and Sabrina Mahfouz, this essay explores the relationship between feminist theory, women's football and social media. Women athletes have consistently been asked about their personal lives, bodies, relationships and anything besides the …

Women Writers Of Film & Television, Haley Hunt

Symposium of Student Scholars

After spending the summer immersed in archival, literary, and online research, I am proud to report my findings on the history of women in screenwriting. With the help of Anna Weinstein, I have compiled original statistics, overviews, and biographies that will be published with the launch of our website, Women Writers of Film & Television (WWFTV). At its core, this site aims to empower young girls with the knowledge and resources they need to get started in the screenwriting field. However, the site is intentionally layered by reading level; it is accessible to all ages on the surface, while also …

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

Abstract of “El laberinto del fauno: A Child’s Imagination and Coping with the Trauma of War”

Guillermo del Toro’s film El laberinto del fauno, known as Pan’s Labyrinth to English speaking audiences, opens up a fantastical world that is just a touch away from reality, but everyone believes this to be the imagination of one child, Ofelia. She tries to complete tasks and learns the truth of the land of post Civil War Spain that she currently resides in while she yearns for another. A child's imagination can be transported by a simple story; there seems to be a special …

Cold Turkey: A Mass Smoking Cessation Event Induced By A Film, Elsie E. Sheppard Aug 2022

Cold Turkey: A Mass Smoking Cessation Event Induced By A Film, Elsie E. Sheppard

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Popular culture can influence how people act in real life. The film Cold Turkey, directed by Norman Lear, provides an example of how people can take inspiration from a film's plot and recreate it to an extent. The people of Greenfield, Iowa, where Cold Turkey was filmed, decided to quit smoking for 30 days, similar to the movie's events. As a result, tobacco companies, such as Philip Morris International, became interested in how and why these people quit smoking for a prolonged period.

My project aimed to compile documents, interviews, and other content about Cold Turkey, Norman Lear, and the …

Community-Engaged Learning: The National Response Within Institutions, Sarena Akhter Aug 2022

Community-Engaged Learning: The National Response Within Institutions, Sarena Akhter

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Community-engaged learning (CEL) has become a relevant part of the current experiential and community culture, with more than 30 universities in Canada (and likely more) partaking in some form of CEL at their institution. However, how does each institution implement CEL, and how accessible are digital media and resources for students and communities who want to learn more about CEL at these institutions? Our research primarily focuses on data collection from digital media (e.g., websites, articles, Google searches) and draws conclusions based on our findings. Our team focuses on rating the overall culture of CEL in Canada based on the …

The Imagined Histories And Futures Of The Past: Wwi And The Cultural Imagination, Kelly Aliano Apr 2022

The Imagined Histories And Futures Of The Past: Wwi And The Cultural Imagination, Kelly Aliano

Far West Popular Culture Association Annual Conference

In this paper, I look at various modes of imagining the futures incarnated by the First World War, beginning with artists and writers, like Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Erich Maria Remarque, who experienced and depicted the war from a firsthand point of view. From here, I expand that framework to include J.R.R. Tolkien, whose masterpiece Lord of the Rings may owe no small debt to his wartime experiences. I consider the Doctor Who episodes, “Human Nature” and “Family of Blood,” as contemporary attempts to reinsert WWI into the cultural consciousness. Finally, I look at the two versions of War Horse …

Peripheral Storytelling: Cinematic Structures And Audience Agency, Carlos Tkacz Apr 2022

Peripheral Storytelling: Cinematic Structures And Audience Agency, Carlos Tkacz

Far West Popular Culture Association Annual Conference

A cultural phenomenon we are all unfortunately familiar with is terrible movies. By terrible movies I mean the kind that lack any semblance of structure, movies in which the characters are flatly drawn, the storylines are predictable, and the writing is especially bad. More specifically, I am interested in why these movies seem to be breeding without end and are no longer relegated to (maybe they never were) the low budget genre films some of us love to hate. I am talking here about the relatively new phenomena of the high-budget, popular-yet-terrible film.

Specifically, I am interested in applying Structuralism, …

Character Development: To Further The Narrative, Lesley Brian Bargo

Symposium of Student Scholars

Character Development: To Further the Narrative.

Presentation Abstract

March 16th, 2022

Graduate Student: Lesley Brian Bargo

Research Mentor: Anna Weinstein

Screenplays on war can often become redundant. Not because they aren’t good screenplays, it’s simply because the focus relies too much on the brutality of war and not enough on the characters being forced to endure it. Hamburger Hill (1987) is not one of the run of the mill Vietnam War films that simply walk us through the killing of both sides without giving us the why. While most films can easily pull off the killing and dying, …

Little Women: A Screenplay Analysis, Chloe Ford Apr 2022

Little Women: A Screenplay Analysis, Chloe Ford

Symposium of Student Scholars

Little Women, written by Louisa May Alcott, details the lives of the four March sisters - Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. The story has been adapted into feature films multiple times, including an adaptation in 1918, 1933, 1949, 1994, and most recently in 2019. The 1994 film was written by Robin Swicord and directed by Gillian Armstrong, and the 2019 film was written by Greta Gerwig and Sarah Polley, and directed by Greta Gerwig. Both films were nominated for multiple Academy Awards. This study will compare and contrast the structure of both films, as well as the characters and …

"10 Things I Hate About You" And The "Not Like Other Girls" Trope, Jazmine Bryant Apr 2022

"10 Things I Hate About You" And The "Not Like Other Girls" Trope, Jazmine Bryant

Symposium of Student Scholars

Critical Analysis Abstract: 10 Things I Hate About You & The “Not Like Other Girls” Trope

The phrase, “not like other girls,” is commonly used to describe a person or character that is quirky, emo, a loner, intelligent, or independent. In film, this description typically has a positive connotation – at least, it’s meant to. A common consensus is that the trope upholds negative stereotypes about women or the group the character is “unlike.” TV Tropes states that by using or conforming to this trope, “it’s implied that your gender is inferior by default,” (TV Tropes). On the other hand, …

Mother!: A Look Into A Religion Based Screen Play, Madeline Ivey Apr 2022

Mother!: A Look Into A Religion Based Screen Play, Madeline Ivey

Symposium of Student Scholars

Darren Aronofsky’s movie Mother!, explores Christianity in a very different way. The movie takes place in a house with Mother, Mother Nature, and him, God. Throughout this chaotic and confusing movie, there are many scenes that symbolize biblical stories from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Through his movie he shows biblical times through Mother Nature’s eyes, which makes religion seem more destructive and selfish. The purpose of this paper is to find connections between the Christian religion and how it is portrayed in the movie. I will do this by researching scenes and how they relate to …

A Character Analysis Of Knives Out, Garrett Bell Apr 2022

A Character Analysis Of Knives Out, Garrett Bell

Symposium of Student Scholars

Rian Johnson’s Knives Out (2019) has been praised by many for its dialogue and its slick, refreshing take on the mystery/thriller genre; but I argue, like many great stories of our time, that it’s the characters in Knives Out that really propel this film near the top of all mystery/thriller triumphs. Rather than reinventing the character archetypes that one would normally see in a film of this caliber, Johnson takes those characters and serves them up in a way that makes them unique to his story: his way. By providing an in-depth analysis of each character in the many twists …

Women Writers Of Film & Television Project: Nancy Meyers, Hannah Henderson Apr 2022

Women Writers Of Film & Television Project: Nancy Meyers, Hannah Henderson

Symposium of Student Scholars

The suppression of women’s voices in the film industry is of no secret to our society. For over a hundred years, many women have been placed in the background and were not given credit for their work in the industry, and only recently have the gates of Hollywood been open to more representation. In the 1980s, many women screenwriters were in creative partnerships with their husbands, and it was difficult for a woman screenwriter to be recognized for her own work and talents aside from the man in her life. One screenwriter, Nancy Meyers was able to garner more fame …

From Stage To Screen: The Art Of The Movie Musical, Vanessa Lopez Apr 2022

From Stage To Screen: The Art Of The Movie Musical, Vanessa Lopez

Symposium of Student Scholars

In this article I take a deeper look into what it takes to make a successful movie musical. When sound was introduced into the movie industry, it was musicals that stole the show. From 1927’s first talkie, The Jazz Singer, to 2021’s movie rendition of Dear Evan Hansen, movie musicals have been a key component of the movie industry. Throughout this article I will be comparing the success of two different kinds of movie musicals. The first type that I will be analyzing are the movie musicals that were written and produced directly for the screen. This includes movies such …

The Journey Of Life Itself, Ashton Webb Apr 2022

The Journey Of Life Itself, Ashton Webb

Symposium of Student Scholars

Life Itself, written and directed by Dan Fogelman, is a heartbreaking tale featuring three different couples and the journey that life takes them on. Throughout the film there are common themes of heartbreak, marital problems, and death. The three stories are joined together by one devastating event, and Fogelman shows how beauty can be made from ashes. In this presentation, I will explore the themes of love, heartbreak, and depression and how these themes shaped the film, allowing Fogelman to intertwine three stories into one in order to tell an interconnected story. Though the film was not well received by …
