Curriculum Vitae: Transsexual Life Writing And The Biofictional Novel, Pamela Caughie
Curriculum Vitae: Transsexual Life Writing And The Biofictional Novel, Pamela Caughie
Pamela Caughie
The complex relation between bio and fiction, life and writing, is central to the project I am currently working on, a comparative scholarly edition of Man into Woman: An Authentic Record of a Change of Sex (1933), the life narrative of Lili Elbe, formerly Einar Wegener, the Danish artist who became Lili Elvenes (her legal name) through a series of surgeries in 1930. In chapter six, Andreas Sparre (the fictional name used for Wegener in the narrative) offers to tell his life story to his friends, Niels and Inger, on the night before his first surgery, his last night as …

Pulse - A Consultation, Barry J. Mauer

On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen killed 49 people and injured 53 at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. We may never know or understand what was in Mateen’s mind, but we can situate his attack within the history of eliminationism in America. Islamist terrorism is just part of a larger phenomenon: right wing eliminationism. But despite centuries of right wing eliminationist words and deeds in the U.S., there is little or no mainstream recognition of the phenomenon. Instead, we are treated to more denial, more distraction, more obfuscation. Until we look this problem squarely in the face, it will …

Equality And Singapore’S First Constitutional Challenges To The Criminalization Of Male Homosexual Conduct, Jack Tsen-Ta Lee
Equality And Singapore’S First Constitutional Challenges To The Criminalization Of Male Homosexual Conduct, Jack Tsen-Ta Lee
Jack Tsen-Ta LEE
In 2013, in Lim Meng Suang and Kenneth Chee Mun-Leon v Attorney-General and Tan Eng Hong v Attorney-General, the High Court of Singapore delivered the first judgments in the jurisdiction considering the constitutionality of section 377A of the Penal Code, which criminalizes acts of 'gross indecency' between two men, whether they occur in public or private. The Court ruled that the provision was not inconsistent with the guarantees of equality before the law and equal protection of the law stated in Article 12(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore. The result was upheld in 2014 by the Court …

Dark Avunculate: Shame, Animality, And Queer Development In Oscar Wilde’S “The Star-Child”, Rasmus R. Simonsen
Dark Avunculate: Shame, Animality, And Queer Development In Oscar Wilde’S “The Star-Child”, Rasmus R. Simonsen
Rasmus R Simonsen, PhD
This article will outline the inequalities of the relationship between the Star-Child and his temporary master, known only as the Magician, in order to argue that Wilde’s fairy tale should be read as the formalization of a queer interval that traumatizes the Victorian norm of maturation. This is not to suggest that “Wilde’s Victorian readers [would] seem to have found [any]thing untoward about the fairy tales” (Duffy 328); nothing, at least, that hinted at the “homoromantic dimensions” which were to become so devastatingly central to his libel trial of 1895 (338). John-Charles Duffy has nevertheless shown that a complex interweaving …
A Queer Vegan Manifesto, Rasmus R. Simonsen
A Queer Vegan Manifesto, Rasmus R. Simonsen
Rasmus R Simonsen, PhD
What does it mean for a person to declare her or his veganism to the world? How does the transition from one diet to another impact one’s sense of self? Veganism challenges the foundational character of how we “act out” our selves—not least of all in the context of sexuality and gender. In my paper, I am thus interested in the potential of veganism to disrupt the “natural” bond between gender formations and the consumption of animal products, as this relates to social and cultural genealogies. Consequently, I will explore a queer form of veganism that affirms the radical impact …

Reading this page, you are not where you are. I have pulled you into me, because I knew your eye would eventually bring you here. Perhaps all we will ever know of each other is what we now share. So—if two can be one—be me; and I will be you. See through the eyes of someone who has not seen the landscape sprawling beneath the highest height you've ever climbed, or touched the face that most often faces yours. I can't guess why you cry when you cry alone, or where you go when you don't want to be found. …

The History Of Bromance, The Rise Of Its Popularity, And The Divergences Between Bromance And Homosexuality In The Human Mindset, Aaron M. Ash
Aaron M Ash
Since the beginning of time, man has needed man—as a friend, a teacher, a confidant, or even something more. As time has gone on, this idea has continued to evolve up until the 1990s when Dave Carnie coined the term ‘Bromance’ in the skateboard magazine, Big Brother. Ironically the term did not become popular until the seventh season of Big Brother, a popular reality television show, when contestants Will Kirby and Mike Malin referred to their relationship as a bromance. Since then, society has seen an ever increasing number of bromances in television, including children’s shows; music; and everyday life. …

Getting Your Bloke On: Gender Issues In The Reality Competition 'I Will Survive', Frank Miller
Getting Your Bloke On: Gender Issues In The Reality Competition 'I Will Survive', Frank Miller
Frank M Miller III
The Australian reality competition "I Will Survive" set out to find a cast replacement for the leading role in the Broadway production of "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." The stage version closed halfway through production the series, forcing a repositioning of the competition as the search to find "Australia's next triple threat." Even when the main prize was a role as a drag queen, however, the series presented a heterocentric approach to gender that treated drag less as a means of personal expression than as a part in a play that just happened to be about two gay men and …
