"I Unsex'd My Dress": Lord Byron's Seduction Of Gender In "The Corsair", "Lara", And "Don Juan", Alexis Spiceland Lee Dec 2010

"I Unsex'd My Dress": Lord Byron's Seduction Of Gender In "The Corsair", "Lara", And "Don Juan", Alexis Spiceland Lee

Dissertations

The goal of this project is to posit a theory of how Byron’s texts, specifically through the development of his hero, construct gender and sexuality as styles of seduction that resist easy classification by binary systems. I propose that Byron’s works characterize gender through ironic performances of seduction that, because they reveal that binary structures lack a stable core, dissolve systemic differentiation and thus fatally complicate any attempt to force the individual into rigid categories of gender or sexual identity. Byron’s works deploy seduction as a tactic of ironic representation of both gender and sexual practice that is necessarily multiplicitous …

The International Yaoi Boys’ Love Fandom And The Regulation Of Virtual Child Pornography: Current Legislation And Its Implications, Mark J. Mclelland, S. Yoo Nov 2010

The International Yaoi Boys’ Love Fandom And The Regulation Of Virtual Child Pornography: Current Legislation And Its Implications, Mark J. Mclelland, S. Yoo

Mark McLelland

This article looks at current international legislation regulating child pornography, particularly at the category of virtual child pornography, or purely fictional images and textual representations of young people defined as “minors”. Current legislation has been drafted with adult male pedophiles in mind in an attempt to stop harm to real children. However, the paper points out that the legislation also inadvertently criminalizes a large, predominantly female fandom of manga fans who use the Internet to participate in online fan clubs dedicated to a Japanese manga genre known as yaoi, which celebrates the love shared between fictional “beautiful boys.” It is …

Sexuality And Human Rights (Fall 2010), Robert D. Tobin Jan 2010

Sexuality And Human Rights (Fall 2010), Robert D. Tobin

Syllabi

What happens when we think of sexuality, with all of its transgressive and individualistic energies, in terms of rationally established universal human rights? Literary texts that focus on individual cases in the context of larger cultural and social traditions with a particular attention to the power of language can help us sort through some of the complex ideas that emerge from a discussion of sexual rights. In this class, we will focus on controversial issues--like sadism, masochism, male homosexuality, lesbianism, age of consent, prostitution, polygamy and transsexuality—that bring rights conflicts to the forefront.

Twilight Follows Tradition: Analyzing "Biting" Critiques Of Vampire Narratives For Their Portrayals Of Gender & Sexuality, Melissa R. Ames Jan 2010

Twilight Follows Tradition: Analyzing "Biting" Critiques Of Vampire Narratives For Their Portrayals Of Gender & Sexuality, Melissa R. Ames

Melissa A. Ames

Vampires have dominated print literature since the 18th century, eventually becoming more visible as they crossed mediated boundaries and genre divides. Now flourishing in neo-gothic realms like science fiction and fantasy, in print genres like chick-lit and young adult, and in the visual realm (from Hollywood’s big screen to daytime television’s sudsy small screen), vampire narratives are finding increased popularity. Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series has shined a new spotlight on the all-encompassing umbrella genre that is “vamp lit,” and with it has come renewed attention to the so-called anti-feminist messages present in such narratives, such as the perceived negative characterization …

Introduction: Homoerotic, Lesbian, And Gay Ethnic And Immigrant Histories, Horacio N. Roque Ramirez Dr. Jan 2010

Introduction: Homoerotic, Lesbian, And Gay Ethnic And Immigrant Histories, Horacio N. Roque Ramirez Dr.

Horacio N Roque Ramirez, Ph.D.

This essay introduces a special journal issue bringing together the well-established field of racial-ethnic and immigration history in the U.S. with the less visible but just as strong and growing field of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) and “queer” history and culture, essays exploring race and ethnicity, immigration and nation, and gender, sex, and sexuality as they inform one another, as well as the making of identities, historical subjects, communities, and policy. The contributors challenge the assumption that the history of immigration and racial-ethnic immigrant settlement take form only along heterosexual or heteronormative lines, whether people’s movements across bodies …

Tops Off To Dancing: An Exotic Form Of Nightlife, Jessica Sanspree Jan 2010

Tops Off To Dancing: An Exotic Form Of Nightlife, Jessica Sanspree

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This ethnographic research investigates the culture of exotic dancing in two exotic dance clubs in Bowling Green, Kentucky. By conducting interviews with a former exotic dancer and completing ethnographic observations in the field of an exotic dance club, I explore how exotic dancers in Bowling Green create and perform sexuality as a method of making money. I examine the rules and regulations, such as "Dancer's etiquette," established and enforced by dancers in order to enforce social order. Furthermore, I assess my informant's perception of identity regarding her role as an exotic dancer, including her reaction to the negative stigmas that …

Faulkner's Sexualized City: Modernism, Commerce, And The (Textual) Body, Peter Lurie Jan 2010

Faulkner's Sexualized City: Modernism, Commerce, And The (Textual) Body, Peter Lurie

English Faculty Publications

Such classicism is the aesthetic opposite of what Faulkner demonstrates at moments in Mosquitoes and that would go on to become his famously baroque style. In the discussion that follows, I will be asking a number of questions about that development, among them the following: What is the role in Faulkner of a baroque, highly refined language, especially when Faulkner uses it to convey sexuality? And what connections (or disconnections) might that style have to Faulkner’s use of the setting of the city, as in Mosquitoes, or elsewhere of the rural countryside? As we will see, changes in these …

Screening The Modern Girl: Intermediality In The Adaptation Of Flaming Youth, Sara Ross Jan 2010

Screening The Modern Girl: Intermediality In The Adaptation Of Flaming Youth, Sara Ross

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

In November 1923, First National Pictures released a film adaptation of a scandalous bestselling novel, Flaming Youth, in which three upper-class sisters flout the conventions of proper courtship and girlish chastity held dear by the previous generation. The novel presents the sisters as examples of the revolution in sexual behavior of the modern girl happening in the United States and around the world. Record crowds flocked to the theater to see the wild partying, nudity, and sex of the book brought to life on screen.

Of course, texts such as these were under close scrutiny for the effect that …

La Vida Sexual De Chopin, Antoni Pizà Jan 2010

La Vida Sexual De Chopin, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

Shakespeare And Homoeroticism: A Study Of Cross-Dressing, Society, And Film, Leigh Bullion Jan 2010

Shakespeare And Homoeroticism: A Study Of Cross-Dressing, Society, And Film, Leigh Bullion

Honors Theses

William Shakespeare’s plays cover an array of topics focused on sexuality, from gender reversal to adultery to beastiality. But perhaps the most consistent and emphasized topic is homoeroticism. This focus on homoeroticism proceeds from the prohibition of women on the English stage and the subsequent female roles young boys would play. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It, and Twelfth Night each present different representations of homoeroticism yet complement each other. A Midsummer Night’s Dream focuses on the erotic potential of unrestrained desire and the tense relationship between female amity and dominating patriarchal and heterosexual interests. As You Like It …

Insert Discourse: Rectal Douching Among Young Hiv-Positive And Hiv-Negative Gay Men In Vancouver, Canada, A. Schilder, Treena Orchard, C. Buchner, S. Strathdee, R. Hogg Dec 2009

Insert Discourse: Rectal Douching Among Young Hiv-Positive And Hiv-Negative Gay Men In Vancouver, Canada, A. Schilder, Treena Orchard, C. Buchner, S. Strathdee, R. Hogg

Dr. Treena Orchard

Douching is a common practice among certain groups of women and MSM, and it is conducted for the purpose of cleanliness as part of bodily hygiene maintenance. Although there has been considerable research about female vaginal douching, understandings of rectal douching (RD) for MSM are limited. In the epidemiological and medical literature, RD is presented as a behaviour that removes beneficial bacteria and the surface epithelium layer of the colon, which can, potentially, increase the risk of HIV transmission in MSM. The paucity of research on male douching practices is curious given the primacy of anal sex in HIV prevention …
