Women In High Technology Enterprises, Sara Lafrance Aug 1997

Women In High Technology Enterprises, Sara Lafrance

MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019

Although women have been in the work force for time immemorial, their ability to obtain positions equal to men's have nearly always been compromised. There have been many efforts to rectify this situation, including legislation, corporate awareness, peer pressure, and individual achievements. But none has held the promise of as much transformation as the changes that are occurring in today's business world. This paper will explore whether the new business model, especially in the high technology sector, will enable women to break through the discrimination barriers of the past and compete on an equal playing field.

Pregnancy Outcomes: A Study Testing A Model For Predicting Health Outcomes In Pregnancy, Tamera Ann Hart-Johnson Jun 1997

Pregnancy Outcomes: A Study Testing A Model For Predicting Health Outcomes In Pregnancy, Tamera Ann Hart-Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

There is a persistent relationship between socioeconomic status and physical health outcomes found in the literature; however the variables mediating this relationship are many, and ways that they interact with each other are complex. The goal of understanding this relationship is to decrease the disparity in health by socioeconomic status.

This study tested a biopsychosocial model proposed by David Williams (1990) to explain the relationship between socioeconomic status and physical health outcomes. The model included the following latent factors: demographics, socioeconomic status, biomedical risk, medical care, psychosocial variables, and health outcomes. The model was tested through a secondary data analysis. …

Medical Treatment And Care Of Hospitalized Maine Women, 1874-1882, Jenny Higgins May 1997

Medical Treatment And Care Of Hospitalized Maine Women, 1874-1882, Jenny Higgins

Senior Scholar Papers

The construction of the ideal Victorian woman as an invalid, weak, delicate, and perpetually prone to illness could not have been maintained without the support of the medical profession. Late nineteenth-century medical ideas embodied and incorporated, explicitly or implicitly, social ideas about women-their nature, role, abilities, and limitations. The medical profession was persuasive and powerful in shaping women's roles, and this influence took on a wide variety of forms. This paper examines one of these forms-the treatment of women in a hospital setting, and how this treatment both reflected and perpetuated existing social understandings of Victorian femininity and gender roles. …

Self-Concept Of Eating-Restrained Women: A Study Of Personal Constructs, Adelia Atkinson Furr Apr 1997

Self-Concept Of Eating-Restrained Women: A Study Of Personal Constructs, Adelia Atkinson Furr

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

A modified version of Kelly's Repertory Test was administered to 15 women identified as eating-restrained, 21 women identified as non-eating-restrained and matched on neuroticism, and 15 women identified as non-eating restrained and low on neuroticism in order to elicit personal constructs related to being overweight, average weight, and underweight. The personal constructs were used in measures of components of self-concept: real self, ideal self, social self, and ideal social self. It was hypothesized that in comparison to the other two groups, the eating-restrained women would exhibit a distinct pattern among the components of self-concept: Real and ideal selves would be …

Battling The Dragons: The Heroic Journeys Of The Ladies Of Avalon In Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists Of Avalon, Dawn E. Owen Mar 1997

Battling The Dragons: The Heroic Journeys Of The Ladies Of Avalon In Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists Of Avalon, Dawn E. Owen

Theses & Honors Papers

This study uses Pearson’s theory of twelve archetypes and the heroic journeys of the ladies of Avalon in Marion Zimmer Bradley’s The Mists of Avalon to determine which archetypes are active in the lives of the ladies Avalon wrote about. In the book, women are seen as more than obstacles, aids, or rewards to males. They are the heroes who refuse to be defined by patriarchal terms. The female characters go on their own quests and seek to transform themselves and the world. Although culture and society affect each of the women, the success of each woman’s journey is determined …

Drowning In Loneliness And Writing The Blues: Creating Lesbian Space In The Novels Of Radclyffe Hall And Leslie Feinberg, Laura Ellen Goetz

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Feminist theory has long been concerned with identity politics, and feminists have grappled with the ideologies and identities of race, sex, gender, and sexuality, to name only a few. Psychoanalytic theorist Teresa Brennan and postmodern theorist Judith Butler combine feminism with their respective fields in their quests to figure out how subjectivities are created, and why some people are objectified or created as objects, while others are created as subjects. Literature is an excellent vehicle for studying subject/object creation and identity politics, because it often mirrors “real” life, because literature can have such an impact on the lives of those …

Le "Devenir Féminin" Dans La Sociéte Moderne Occidentale À Travers Les Deux Romans De Virginie Despentes, Nadia Louar

Dissertations and Theses

Empowered Narratives : Drama Praxis And The Archetype As A Means To Authentic Voice For Women, Beryl Chalk

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis contests the status of gender as a social construct by considering how women develop a personal ethnography when engaging in drama and expressive arts practices. There is no known research on drama praxis as a signifier to Australian women's identity, a major focus of this work will be, 'Who has the authority over women's expression and means of expression? Who has the authority to interpret the experience? Who has authority over other people's experience?' This thesis addresses the internalised- oppression which refers to the process by which women internalise the 'fictionalised' reality prescribed to them as women marked …

The Influence Of Out-Group Network Ties On The Television Usage And Attitudes Of Mormon Women, Lois D. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Analysis of survey data collected from more than 400 LDS women (n=429) indicates that as the number of non-LDS or inactive LDS network associates increases, so does the women's identification with modern female TV characters. The frequency of network conversations about television also correlates to several television behaviors and attitudes such as watching entertainment and informational TV programming, identifying with modern characters, and regarding TV as useful. Mirroring the national trend, LDS women who are more educated use television less. A model is presented which details the flow and impact of personal network influence on the television habits and attitudes …

Narrow Escapes: A Feminist Deconstruction Of Anorexia Nervosa In Women, Yvonne L. Mireau Jan 1997

Narrow Escapes: A Feminist Deconstruction Of Anorexia Nervosa In Women, Yvonne L. Mireau

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis is a feminist deconstruction of anorexia nervosa (AN) in women. It begins with questioning the truth claims about AN established by the psychological and psychiatric fields. After an overview of the medical model literature and the feminist literature on eating problems, a critical analysis is used to deconstruct the sociocultural elements of AN. The purpose of this analysis is to critically examine the assumptions which have shaped how clinicians approach the phenomenon of AN in their practice with clients. What has been accepted as underlying psychopathology is deconstructed to reveal normative culturally constructed factors. A paradigm shift towards …
