At 4 p.m. every Wednesday, a group gathers to develop methods in which it can promote exactly what its namesake implies: Peace. The Attorney General's Office reached an agreement late last week with Casey Belanger, the University of Maine student accused of sending threatening e-mail to several folders on the FirstClass computer system. Both Belangers and the judge have signed a "consent judgement," permanently restraining him from harassing anyone of the minority status, according to Assistant Attorney General Stephen Wessler.

While perusing the discussion folders in my FirstClass account recently, I happened upon the gender folder. For some odd reason, a number of files pertained to the subject of God and religion. Whatever the reason for using this folder to discuss such debated issues is no matter, rather the content of these messages really got me thinking.

The Idaho Territorial Penitentiary's First Female Inmate, Fred E. Woods
Faculty Publications
While doing research on the experience of Mormon polygamists incarcerated at the Idaho Penitentiary, Fred Woods became curious about a woman imprisoned there at the same time. The Idaho Penitentiary's Convict Register names "Heneba" as the first female inmate received, on May 31, 1887. Next to her name is written in parentheses "squaw." For many years it has been unclear whether "Heneba" was her first or last name and what the background of this mysterious Native American was. Information about her age at the time of her incarceration, her family life, and the details of her later years and death …

An informed community is a safe community, according to Public Safety Police Lt. Alan Stormann, but recent actions suggest the campus police are only willing to go so far in keeping the community informed. In 1996, seven "forcible rapes" were reported in the university's annual safety and security information report. The definition of forcible rape includes forcible "fondling, non-forcible incest and statutory rape." Of the seven reported "forcible rapes," according to Lt. Stormann, three were actual rapes, one was an attempted rape, two involved offensive touching and the last one involved a man masturbating on a woman. Of the seven …

The penalties levied by the University of Maine against a student accused of issuing a violent threat on FirstClass [the University's email system] have been set, but an investigation by UMaine's Public Safety continues. Casey Belanger, 19, of Caribou, has been ordered by UMaine to serve 30 hours of community service over two semesters. The university has also suspended his FirstClass account and placed him on "probated suspension." The punishment sought by the state, however, is potentially more severe.

"Bias motivated threats of violence have absolutely no place anywhere in society, including our universities and colleges," Attorney General Andrew Ketterer said.

Court-Created Boundaries Between A Visible Lesbian Mother And Her Children, Susan J. Becker
Court-Created Boundaries Between A Visible Lesbian Mother And Her Children, Susan J. Becker
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
This essay identifies some of the boundaries and obstacles imposed by the courts on a "visible" lesbian mother striving to maintain a healthy relationship with her children. The term "visible" is used to describe a mother whose lesbian sexuality has been revealed to a court empowered with defining her future contact with her children. The primary focus here is on children who were conceived through a heterosexual relationship, and where a heterosexual parent, grandparent, or other person is challenging the lesbian mother's right to custody of, or visitation with, her own children. Court created boundaries are identified and discussed in …

Richard Paul, Gloria Anzaluda, And Mestiza Consciousness: Shifting The Borders Of Critical Thinking, Margaret E. Cronin
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
In recent years, many theorists and practitioners in the field of critical and creative thinking have moved beyond a discrete skills understanding of critical and creative thinking to advocate a more holistic approach. This approach focuses on recognizing underlying assumptions, analyzing frames of reference, and fore grounding personal and social biases. Yet despite this much needed move toward contextualizing thinking and the thinker, there is little attention given to the role that power and identity difference play in the development and teaching of thinking. This thesis concerns itself with the issues of power, identity, and difference in thinking by comparing …
