Demanding Citizenship: The U.S. Women's Movement, 1848-1930, Lena Sweeten
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The U. S. women's movement began in 1848 with the Seneca Falls Convention for women's rights. As set forth by the convention's "Declaration of Sentiments," the movement was concerned with a broad array of social, religious, cultural and political reforms to bring about gender equality. Following the Civil War, the women's movement took on the semblance of a single-issue movement, as the effort to achieve woman suffrage consumed feminists' resources and energies. The acquisition of suffrage was intended to be the vehicle for women to gain the spectrum of rights initially defined in 1848. Extravagant predictions about the power of …
Romancing Visual Women: From Canon To Console, Roberta Sabbath
Romancing Visual Women: From Canon To Console, Roberta Sabbath
English Faculty Research
This dissertation juxtaposes the romantic modal treatment of powerful, admired women which canonical male authors and feminist authors and critics construct with those constructed by contemporary women for the visual mass media of video, broadcast television, and computer. The discourse of the former produces the figure of a fragmented woman who is rare, supernatural, marginalized, and impossible. The discourse of the latter produces the figure of a psychologized woman who is typical, natural, mainstream, and possible. To examine the discourse of impossibility, I use three canonical works: Augustine's Confessions; Chretien de Troyes' Perceval; and Dante's Divine Comedy. I also survey …

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
The work of CLAGS has been expanding and accelerating at such a rate that we find ourselves excited, but breathless. In an effort to systematize and regularize our procedures, we have adopted a set of by-laws that will govern our operation. In addition, we are happily benefiting from the infusion of creativity, commitment, and energy brought to our efforts by our talented new Board members. I am pleased to say we ended the academic year on an extremely positive note.

What, Me Worry?, Malcolm Smith
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Everyone knows that Maine is Vacationland and the way life should be (full of lobsters and loons), but we also have plenty of another commodity- hate. If you are not a member of a group traditionally persecuted, then you have nothing to worry about, right? Hate in Maine takes on many faces and is felt by many group and many people. Charlie Howard's name comes to mind. This summer, concerned Maine people gathered to honor his memory and not let his death be in vain. Howard was thrown to his death off a bridge by three teenagers in the city …

Women Without Men: Hemingway's Female Characters, Kelly Brillhart
Women Without Men: Hemingway's Female Characters, Kelly Brillhart
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Ernest Hemingway wrote four major novels and dozens of short stories during his long career as one of America's preeminent twentieth century writers. Both during his lifetime and after his death, critics have written extensively about his work, analyzing it, interpreting it, and evaluating it. Perhaps the most debated aspect of the canon is Hemingway's treatment of female characters. In the past, critics tended to arrange Hemingway's heroines into categories, frequently dividing them into two groups: the bitches and the goddesses. More recent criticism eschews the restrictions of categories, focusing on the women as individuals and attempting to explain their …

"Proper" Men And "Fallen" Women: The Unprotectedness Of Wives In Othello, Ruth Vanita
"Proper" Men And "Fallen" Women: The Unprotectedness Of Wives In Othello, Ruth Vanita
Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications
A surprisingly large number of Elizabethan and Jacobean plays represent or culminate in the murder of a wife, the reason cited almost always being her infidelity.' The plays construct these murders, often led up to by beating and torture of the wife, as tragedy, yet endorse them as a form of justice. These tragedies have come to be known as "domestic tragedies," suggesting that the events are private, springing from a familial relationship, unlike tragedies which involve political murders and take place in the public sphere. An unresolved contradiction is evident in the titles of these plays which signal the …
