Starting, Publishing, And Sustaining An Online Journal: Beginner’S Workshop, Pat Maxwell, Anne Larrivee, Lisa Deluca
Anne Larrivee
This interactive workshop will offer best practices to follow when creating, publishing, and sustaining an online journal. Although online journals share many characteristics, journals can vary based on how editors choose to set them up. As more libraries assist with this process, editors are coming to librarians with questions about how to start. This collaborative pairing leads to questions such as: How can librarians be involved in the publishing process, and to what capacity? Who will design the journal? How can the library promote these journals and encourage submissions? Learn from a team of librarians who will use their consulting, …

One Evening As I Strayed: Women Collectors Of Irish Traditional Music, A Journey Through Space, Time And Sources. Music Library Association, Annual Meeting, 28 February 2014, Margaret Ericson
Margaret D. Ericson
My focus is on the importance of using a wide variety of resources -- interdisciplinary databases, full text journal resources, archives and specialized music collections -- to piece together a picture of the role of women the early years of folk music scholarship, and in the preservation and documentation of Irish traditional music. Inspired by early women folk song collectors in Maine, and Maine singers of old who who sang ballads of Irish origin, the author questioned why there was so little information about women collectors of traditional music in Ireland and the repertoire they discovered. Irish women faced unusual …
New Wine Into Old Wineskins?: Adding The Visual To Information Literacy Instruction, Carol A. Leibiger, Alan W. Aldrich
New Wine Into Old Wineskins?: Adding The Visual To Information Literacy Instruction, Carol A. Leibiger, Alan W. Aldrich

Images are significant information carriers in new technologies. Scrutinizing the written word ignores communication work done by images. Intermediality, or information literacy understood as metaliteracy, suggests ways to assess images using many of the same criteria for evaluating verbal content, with added visual-literacy criteria. The presenters combine visual and textual literacy into a holistic critical-thinking approach, which enriches interpretation when learners apply rigorous rhetorical criteria to texts, regardless of their media. Suggestions for such instruction will be provided in a LibGuide.

Many librarians are using the LibGuides product to develop online subject guides, provide library support for courses and the reference desk, or for sharing information with their patrons. LibGuides have won acclaim from librarians because of the ease with which they can be created. One of the most useful features of LibGuides is the ability to share content across different LibGuide pages. Conversely, one of the most problematic issues is the constant need to update content resulting from changing web page URLs, changes in, or even elimination of, databases reflecting changes in the information industry; and revising content in teaching …

We are well aware that most members of our campus communities are highly dependent on mobile technologies. What are the implications for libraries? What are the implications for teaching these technologies and via these technologies? How can we keep our colleagues up to speed in this maelstrom of technology? We can now use WorldCat.org on our mobile phones, and EBSCOhost just released its customized application for mobile device users. How can we integrate these new services into an already full menu of services? How do we get started, and which services should we be providing? How can we best integrate …

LibGuides have captured the attention of the American academic library world. Subject guides like LibGuides are intended to provide access to resources for disciplines or courses to supplement library instruction provided during one-shot sessions or at the reference desk. LibGuides are available to users when and where they are needed. A constant refrain in the literature on subject guides is the workload inherent in their creation and maintenance. LibGuides are easy to create. However, the time required to maintain LibGuides continues to have a strong impact on workload for otherwise busy librarians.
As Information Literacy Coordinator (ILC), the presenter faces …

The Local Is Global: Broker For Human Rights “Florence Kitchelt, Connecticut Peace Activist And Feminist,” 1920-1961, Danelle L. Moon
Danelle L. Moon
In this paper, I will explore the role of local peace activist and feminist, Florence Ledyard Kitchelt (1874-1961) in supporting social justice, equality, and world peace. In 1924 Kitchelt accepted a paid position with the Connecticut League of Nation’s Association (CLNA), and for nearly twenty years she served as secretary and director of the organization. Working through the CLNA she canvassed the state promoting peace education and to building support for the League of Nations and the World Court. In 1925 she traveled to Geneva to study the League of Nations and attended the Assembly. Between the wars she worked …
