The rate of immigrants coming from Asia in to the U. S. is growing at a rapid rate. However, research on Asian-Americans is scarce, particularly South-Asian-Americans. This group of immigrants face the same issues that the majority of immigrants coming to the United States face, but also face some additional unique challenges due to cultural background, religion, family expectations, and heritage. Most of these immigrants belong to transnational families. There are many discrepancies between what is expected of husbands and wives, especially when it comes to raising children and doing household chores in the Indian context. It is important to …

The Power And Importance Of Women In Television And Film, Rachael Mackinnon May 2019

The Power And Importance Of Women In Television And Film, Rachael Mackinnon

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Glazed, the pilot episode of a situation comedy series, is just beginning to explore what the world of television has in store for women in 2018. At a time like now where women across the nation are feeling the important effects of entering the Fourth Wave of feminism, there is no time like the present to celebrate the beautiful mind that is that of a woman.

For far too long, women in television have been just something to merely look at. More often than not, the crew would be comprised of mostly men: the strong-willed directors, the scandalous producers, …

An Exploration Into The Causes And Consequences Of Women As A Minority In Technical Fields, Emily Fesnak May 2017

An Exploration Into The Causes And Consequences Of Women As A Minority In Technical Fields, Emily Fesnak

Honors Capstone Projects - All

This paper examines the causes behind why fewer women enter technology fields than men. By utilizing previous published research and studies from 1994-2016, the analyses made in this paper explore the evolution of women’s interest and leadership in technology fields. The research dictates that there are not just sociological and structural causes for female adherence to entering technology fields, but the research also points to psychological causes, as well. In order to improve female representation and leadership in technology fields, it is crucial that these causes are acknowledged and addressed directly. Specifically, employers must recognize the differences between male and …

Feminist Cultural Analysis Of An Invisibilized Genocide: Gender, Disability, And Memory In Texts By Zabel Yesayan, Hasmik Djoulakian May 2017

Feminist Cultural Analysis Of An Invisibilized Genocide: Gender, Disability, And Memory In Texts By Zabel Yesayan, Hasmik Djoulakian

Honors Capstone Projects - All

This research is a feminist cultural analysis of the novels, letters, and short stories of Zabel Yesayan. Yesayan was a writer, activist, and teacher during the early twentieth century, during the Armenian Genocide, and up until her death in the mid-1940s when the Soviet Union took control of Eastern European countries, including Armenia. This project insists not only on telling the history of an invisibilized genocide, but also on telling that history through a critical feminist lens based on the documented observations and creative interventions of a woman who lived during the genocide.

In many of her works, Yesayan imagines …

The Role Of Mail In The First Women’S Rights Movement: A Project Of Resistance And Knowledge Formation, Hannah-Abigail Mosier May 2017

The Role Of Mail In The First Women’S Rights Movement: A Project Of Resistance And Knowledge Formation, Hannah-Abigail Mosier

Honors Capstone Projects - All

This paper argues that mail correspondence among 19th century suffragists functions as a practice of creating space for cultivating a political feminist consciousness and sustaining the first women’s rights movement. Using Michel de Certeau’s theory of space and Nancy Fraser’s work on feminist counterpublics, letters from a variety of suffragists, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, were analyzed. Through a close reading of these letters, this paper identifies alternative discursive patterns as they circulate within those epistolary spaces. The early suffragists used letters to reaffirm their identity as white, middle-class, educated, Protestant women at the same time …

Exposing Narrative Ideologies Of Victimhood In Emma Donaghue’S Room And Gillian Flynn’S Gone Girl, Meredith Jeffers

Stories about abducted women and murdered wives are sadly common on cable and network news programs, from Nancy Grace to Dateline. These at the center of Emma Donaghue’s Room (2010) and Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl (2012). These contemporary novels manipulate the narrative conventions of popular true-crime stories to expose the

In the each chapter, I examine the interesting narrative perspectives of Room and Gone Girl to understand the ways that these novels deconstruct mass media narratives of violence to reveal ideas about gender. In Room, Donaghue dislocates the narration by narrating the novel not from the perspective of …

Contesting Victorian Beliefs: The Unintended Effects Of Victorian Novels, Christina Barquin May 2015

Contesting Victorian Beliefs: The Unintended Effects Of Victorian Novels, Christina Barquin

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Victorian society reproduced polarized gender roles known as the ideology of the separate spheres in order to confine the authority of women. However, as the Victorian Era progressed social norms were gradually contested, and the consequences of the assertion of female authority led to reform. In reinterpreting the Victorian women’s movement, I will interpret the effects of the writers of the late nineteenth century who argued explicitly against proposed changes in the traditional position of middle-class women. I will most closely examine how the late Victorian novels, A Marriage Below Zero by Alan Dale and The Revolt of Man by …

Girls’ Education, Child Marriage, & Gender Justice: A Study Of Balika Shivir Educational Camp, Rajasthan, India, Nira Pandya May 2013

Girls’ Education, Child Marriage, & Gender Justice: A Study Of Balika Shivir Educational Camp, Rajasthan, India, Nira Pandya

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Girls’ education has long been considered a significant indicator of a girl’s age at marriage in India. Based on this idea, policymakers in India have designed or supported various expensive programs to eliminate child marriage in the country. Using a feminist lens, this paper explores one such intervention, Balika Shivir, an adolescent girls’ residential camp, located in the village of Lunkaransar, Rajasthan, in Western India. I focus specifically on my interviews with girls in this camp, highlighting their reflections on a number of issues dealing with education, culture, and agency in connection with their experiences at Balika Shivir. The …

The phenomenon of human trafficking, especially the trafficking of young women and girls into exploitative and commercial sex labor, has recently attracted considerable local, national and international attention. This sex trafficking phenomenon exists against the backdrop of poverty, unemployment, and social instability, signaling a correlation between these elements. This research paper will define the concept of human trafficking in comparison to human smuggling and migration and will discuss the complexity in applying the definition. The magnitude and scope of the problem of human trafficking will be examined as well as its causes.

Human trafficking will be analyzed by international standards …

Hero/Heroine: A Study Of The Representation Of Womanhood In Victorian And Neo-Victorian Literature, Laura Depalma

In this paper, I compare two novels: Shirley by Charlotte Brontë and A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray. Shirley follows the lives of two girls navigating adolescence in the early nineteenth century; A Great and Terrible Beauty is the story of four girls, also transitioning into womanhood, in the late Victorian era.

The first interesting thing about these two pieces is that both authors choose to set them in their relative pasts: Brontë, writing near the middle of the nineteenth century, sets her work in 1812, while contemporary writer Libba Bray sets her piece in the Victorian era. …

Gender Identity And Social Networking: A Queer-Feminist Critique Of Facebook, Gregory David Sides May 2010

Gender Identity And Social Networking: A Queer-Feminist Critique Of Facebook, Gregory David Sides

Honors Capstone Projects - All

The purpose of my project is to foster critical discussions of the on-line social networking site Facebook by analyzing gender politics as mechanisms used on Facebook to include or restrict acceptance of users. I implement a gender-queer methodology in my work. This methodology complicates traditional understandings of sex and gender, and views them as a fluid continuum where one might exist anywhere between male and female, and beyond. In lieu of a traditional academic paper, I have made the conscious choice to execute my methods, methodology, and critique into an art piece. This serves an important purpose of making my …

Collaborating For Social Change: Photographic Empowerment And Activist Blogging, Jennifer Dana Weill May 2010

Collaborating For Social Change: Photographic Empowerment And Activist Blogging, Jennifer Dana Weill

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Much of my coursework in my major, Women’s and Gender Studies, focuses on the way that certain identities have been privileged, oppressed, stereotyped and marginalized both socially and systematically on local and global scales. In particular, I study how societal institutions disadvantage and discriminate against non-hegemonic groups of people and the resistance and collaboration that these people have engaged in to challenge the dominant institutions.

These themes inspired me to design and create a collaborative photography collection on oppression and stereotyping among students at Syracuse University. The photographs are based on histories and stories that my participants shared with me …

Patchwork Memories: A Mother-Daughter Memoir, Maggie Gordon May 2008

Patchwork Memories: A Mother-Daughter Memoir, Maggie Gordon

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Patchwork Memories is a relational memoir that illustrates the experiences of a mother and daughter. It was written over the course of six months, from September, 2007 to March, 2008.

I began writing the memoir exactly two weeks after my mother passed away from a four-and-a-half year battle with lung cancer. Originally, the story was to become a “straight” memoir, but after a couple weeks, I found myself creeping into the stories just as often as my mother appeared. I decided it would be inappropriate to write a memoir about a woman who could not offer her own insights about …

I Am What I Wear: The Use Of Dress In Constructing And Evaluating Sexual Identity, Jean Stevens May 2006

I Am What I Wear: The Use Of Dress In Constructing And Evaluating Sexual Identity, Jean Stevens

Honors Capstone Projects - All

This thesis explores different disciplinary studies and discussions of dress, and more specifically, the use of dress in constructing a gendered identity and sexual identity. To conduct this research, I performed a literature review and referenced various social psychological, sociological, and/or feminist theoretical frameworks. I argue that dress cannot serve as any sort of innate or accurate indicator of sexual identity; rather, the meanings associated with dress are socially produced and vary across time and place. Evidence for this argument emerges only after a literature review, as one can recognize a common theme linking the literature, or perhaps a commonly …
