Tangled Up: Women’S Experiences In Mathematics, Lori Loftin
Honors College
This thesis is a bridge between two disciplines: Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Mathematics. The first portion of the work synthesizes both theory and previously done studies to describe the state of women in mathematics as a whole, as well as historicizing the role of women in mathematics. Obstacles to the full and equal participation of women in mathematics are examined through a feminist lens. The second part of the thesis is a feminist biography crafted from an interview with a professor of mathematics, Dr. Erica Flapan. This provides information about her personal experiences as a woman in mathematics …

A flyer announcing the renaming of the University of Maine Student Women's Association as The Feminist Collective. The Student Women's Association has had a decades long history of making UMaine a more inclusive, more feminist place. From inhabiting the original Women's Resource center, to hosting Take Back the Night every year, to our most recent success in reviving the Women's Resource Center. We are proud that SWA has been a beacon of intersectional feminism here at UMaine for many many years. This year we will be continuing the tradition of learning and growing from our past and adapting to each …

Playing At Women And Men: A Discourse Analysis Of Gender And Sexuality Performance In An Online Play-By-Post Role-Playing Game, Caitlin M. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Online play-by-post role-playing games mark the discursive intersection between computer-mediated-communication and gaming. The performance of gender and sexuality is an important aspect of online play-by-post role-playing games.
Although play-by-post role-playing games are open world and do not have the same graphical and technological constraints as other forms of gaming, the performances on them are governed by both explicit and implicit rules. Performances of gender and sexuality are also governed by cultural standards. This thesis seeks to describe how players perform gender and sexuality within these boundaries.
This thesis describes the performance of gender and sexuality on the website Another Day …

The Lipstick Project, The University Of Maine Honors College
The Lipstick Project, The University Of Maine Honors College
Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series
Leigh Boyle will share her story of The Lipstick Project, which grew out of her 2010 volunteer work in a women's hospital in Northern Ethiopia. The hospital cares for women with obstetric fistula, a condition resulting from prolonged, obstructed labor that leaves women chronically incontinent and ostracized. Leigh began giving weekly manicures to the isolated women, an act that proved life-giving for all. Upon returning home to Vancouver, Leigh saw similar need for restorative work in modern healthcare and established The Lipstick Project, a woman run volunteer organization that provides free, professional spa treatments to people in hospice and hospitals …

WGS 201 Wonder Woman: Sheroe, Amazon Princess, Feminist Icon In this course, we will delve into the politics and secret history of one of the most popular feminist icons and symbols of female power: Wonder Woman. A central theme of the course is the social construction of feminine power; the role of pop culture and the media in shaping this and how iconic representations of power translate off the page into the "real world." The rise and fall (and re-ascent) of Wonder Woman's cultural status becomes a fascinating lens to examine the Women's Rights/Lib Movements she was assigned to bridge. …

Being & Not Being Franco-American: The Perspective Of One 21st Century Millennial, Maegan Maheau
Franco-American Centre Franco-Américain Undergraduate Scholarship
I am attempting to share a collective analysis of self-explored thoughts as to where and why I have certain viewpoints or biases on whether “this” or “that” might account for my understanding of what a Franco-American is. The question of being and not being a Franco American is a collection of observations and inductions, both through my socially crafted subjective lens and by relating such matters beyond personal experience.
