Blue Bloods, Movie Queens, And Jane Does: Or How Princess Culture, American Film, And Girl Fandom Came Together In The 1910s, Diana Anselmo-Sequeira

This article explores the complex relationship established between young film actresses and their adolescent female fans during the second decade of the twentieth century. In the 1910s, popular press often promoted movie stars in their teens—such as Mary Pickford, Shirley Mason, Mae Marsh, and Lila Lee—as rag-to-riches Cinderellas released from urban squalor due to employment in the motion pictures. Fan magazines also presented these girl stars as blue-blooded princesses, whose royal bloodline enriched American stardom. Such press pageantry invited girl fans to identify with girl stars’ mythologized biographies.

In the paper, I conduct a film analysis of The Social Network and examine its portrayal of Facebook’s founders and collaborators. I argue that the film, while providing a new image of geek culture and youth’s role in digital culture, has incorporated the debasing views against women and people of color that is very common in the culture. The enormous popularity of the film indicates how this stereotype is widely accepted. At the turn of the twentieth century, the figure of the adolescent girl emerged in popular culture, her amorphous specter haunting the American screen. For the next two decades, psychologists, scientists, columnists, and filmmakers would struggle to visualize a figure that was - physically, intellectually, and spiritually - defined by the ephemerality of transformation. Further, shaped by a deep-seeded cultural tradition that equated young femininity with mysticism, the adolescent girl became quickly visualized as a liminal figure, the uncanny mediator between the living and the dead.

My dissertation looks at the connections between Lacan’s four discourses and the sexuation graph in order to claim that sexuation is discursive and that, as Lacan presents it with the phallus as its quilting point, the sexuation graph is a narrative based on patriarchal hegemony, which is one of many possible narratives. I argue that through the hysteric’s discourse and a removal of the phallus as the Symbolic-Imaginary quilting point, we can begin to formulate new narratives of sexuated subjectivities. Argues that a new mode of spectatorship emerges for women during the 1920s, which employs to advantage the extra-diegetic components of spectacle in theater design, new customized genres for female filmgoers, fandom, and exotic male film stars, such as Rudolph Valentino.
