The Second Shift: Why It Is Diminishing But Still An Issue, Kayla Van Gorp Apr 2013

The Second Shift: Why It Is Diminishing But Still An Issue, Kayla Van Gorp

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

This literature review will examine the concept of the second shift by comparing Arlie Hochschild’s classic, The Second Shift, to more recent literature focused on the second shift. There is an obvious contradiction between the amount of work that Hochschild proposed women were performing due to the second shift in the 1970s and 1980s (15 more hours per week than their male counterparts) and the amount of work that the current literature suggests women in today’s society are performing (five more hours per week than their male counterparts). Where is this contradiction coming from? This literature review will focus …

Locked In The Classroom: Teachers Coming Out To Students, Alicia Vann Apr 2013

Locked In The Classroom: Teachers Coming Out To Students, Alicia Vann

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.

The use of the "S" word among students and teachers can become quite controversial. Sexuality is becoming a topic of open discussion, but also one of avoidance. The process of "coming out" about one's homosexuality is a long and hard progression. This is largely due to people assuming that heterosexuality is the sexual identity of those around them. Due to the assumption of heterosexuality, homosexuals have a harder time "coming out" to others. This course becomes harder for teachers than for other homosexuals, as teachers are seen …

Women In Medicine, Tierney Sullivan Apr 2013

Women In Medicine, Tierney Sullivan

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.

It seems that most individuals regardless of gender, race or ethnicity are in a constant rat race to keep up with the demands of modern day society and be as successful as possible. Looking at a college population, everyone has high goals and ambitions and is hoping to be the best in the field they enter. However, women are faced with the dilemma of what to do when life puts another barrier up around us. Women have gained the access to equality of education that we hoped …

The Inequality Of Sport: Women < Men, Valarie Hanson Apr 2013

The Inequality Of Sport: Women < Men, Valarie Hanson

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.

It has been 30 years since Title IX legislation granted women equal playing time, but the male-dominated world of sports journalism has yet to catch up with the law. Coverage of women's sports lags far behind men's and focuses on female athletes' femininity and sexuality over their achievements on the court and field. While female athleticism challenges gender norms, women athletes continue to be depicted in traditional roles that reaffirm their femininity - as wives and mothers or sex objects. By comparison, male athletes are framed according …

Didacticism And The Male Reader In Samuel Richardson's Pamela, Maria Zahid Apr 2013

Didacticism And The Male Reader In Samuel Richardson's Pamela, Maria Zahid

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.

One might say that Samuel Richardson's 18th century novel Pamela is essentially a love story that, like the chick lit of today, appeals mostly to a female audience. Contrary to the stereotype that women were the only ones who liked reading such works is the fact that males were also avid novelreaders. Admittedly, male readership is often a barely-trodden segment in the pathway of the study of novels - particularly novels such as Pamela, Frances Burney's Evelina, and Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Considering Richardson's emphasis …

Who Owns A Woman's Body?, Karyssa Tuthill Apr 2013

Who Owns A Woman's Body?, Karyssa Tuthill

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.

Every hour, approximately eight women around the world die as a result of complications from unsafe induced abortions. Almost half of those who survive are hospitalized due to complications including hemorrhage and sepsis. Roe v. Wade is becoming a faded memory from the past as U.S. states place further restrictions. Abortion is a worldwide issue that needs to be addressed now. Too many women are putting themselves at risk to obtain one of modern medicine's safest procedures. Not only should abortion be legalized on a global-level, but …

Female Athletes In The Media: Under Representation And Inadequacy, Jessica Shaller Apr 2013

Female Athletes In The Media: Under Representation And Inadequacy, Jessica Shaller

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

A content analysis of Sports Illustrated covers determined there is an under representation of female athletes in print media. Also, because of the sexualized manner in which female athletes are portrayed, they suffer from inadequate depiction. Women in sports suffer from insufficient media coverage, not only in regards to their lack of presence in major sports publications but also in their stereotypical depiction in print journalism.

Extramarital Sexuality, Monogamy, And Mate Poaching: Evolutionary And Societal Forces That Define Sexual Behaviors And Roles For Men And Women, Jason Northrup Apr 2013

Extramarital Sexuality, Monogamy, And Mate Poaching: Evolutionary And Societal Forces That Define Sexual Behaviors And Roles For Men And Women, Jason Northrup

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

Through the discussion of prevalence of extramarital sexuality (EMS), jealousy, domestic violence, monogamy, marriage, evolutionary theories, and mate poaching, a theme emerges as human sexuality finds a medium between social and cultural constructs and evolutionary constructs within the context of male and female differences. It is suggested that mate poaching has transpired due to monogamy and marriage being the defining factors of human sexual relations where needs are not being met. Also, there exists several significantly diverse sexual roles and behaviors between males and females. Men are more interested in sexual novelty and variety, whereas women are more interested in …

Use Of Nasonia Vitripennis To Evaluate Genomic Imprinting And Haplodiploid Inheritance, Carolyn Fisher Apr 2013

Use Of Nasonia Vitripennis To Evaluate Genomic Imprinting And Haplodiploid Inheritance, Carolyn Fisher

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

During fertilization, male and female gametes fuse and a diploid organism is generated. However, in some cases, not all of the genes from a parental genome are expressed. Such instances are known as genomic imprinting—when a gene from the genome of one parent is expressed and the respective gene from the other parental genome is silenced. When the gene that is meant to be expressed is absent or not functioning correctly, a genetic disorder can occur. In humans, such genetic disorders include Prader-Willi, Angelman, Beckwith-Wiedemann, and Silver-Russell syndromes. This experiment studies the effects of genomic imprinting in the parasitic wasp …

"Most Blessed Of Women": An Exegetical Study Of The Roles Of Women Under Patriarchy In Judges 5:24-31, Tamara Dixon Apr 2013

"Most Blessed Of Women": An Exegetical Study Of The Roles Of Women Under Patriarchy In Judges 5:24-31, Tamara Dixon

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.

The Old Testament book of Judges is often cited for its violent and destructive depictions, since the textual episodes relate to the aggressive nature of war, the erosion of interpersonal relationships from deception, and the immorality of the Israelites. The integrity of Yahweh's chosen people steadily degenerates until the climatic conclusion of Judges wherein the Israelites act out belligerent aggression upon each other in tribal civil warfare. Despite the collective disregard for the covenant's provision of monotheistic faithfulness as established between the people and Yahweh, the deity …
