The Martin Duberman Fellowship— An endowed fellowship named for CLAGS founder and first executive director, Martin Duberman, this fellowship is awarded to a senior scholar (tenured university professor or advanced independent scholar) from any country doing scholarly research on the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer (LGBTQ) experience. University affiliation is not necessary. All applicants must be able to show a prior contribution to the field of LGBTQ studies.

Several things coincided to shape the space from which this lecture emerged. The first was an email from a list I'm on, soliciting creative, artistic responses to climate change. The second was a call for proposals for a symposium on "subversive imaginaries." The third, an ongoing conversation with a dancer friend about critical embodiment practices. Fourth, the tangle of thoughts sorting themselves out into various bits of prose and syllabi then being demanded by editors and administrators. On May 6 and 7, 2005, Trans Politics, Social Change, and Justice brought over four hundred trans people and allies into a single building. A feeling of electricity was everywhere. Not because this was the first trans conference — it was not. Nor was it the largest. The problem of who I legally am in the world I live in has been vexatious throughout my adult life. Like other transsexual people worldwide, I face an inadequate legal framework in which to exist. Some of us live within states and nations that recognise the difficulties and attempt to provide a route way through the morass of problems that arise; others barely, if not at all, even acknowledge our being. Shannon Minter Speaks On Transgender Issues In Queer Theory, Salvador Vidal

Shannon Minter, a staff attorney for the National Center for Lesbian Rights in San Francisco, presented an enlightening and engaging talk called Piety, Projection, and Denial: The Uses and Misuses of Transgender People in Queer Theory at a well-attended CLAGS colloquium on November 30th. Minter is well known for having transitioned from female to male (FTM) while working for a national LGB rights advocacy organization. In addition to his work on LGB custody, parenting, youth, marriage, and immigration issues at NCLR, he is also a leading advocate for the rights of transgendered people.
