Girls On Screen: How Film And Television Depict Women In Public Relations, Jane Johnston Sep 2011

Girls On Screen: How Film And Television Depict Women In Public Relations, Jane Johnston

Jane Johnston

This paper explores how women in public relations have been depicted in the popular culture forms of film and television. With some reference to early screen depictions, it focuses primarily on film and television from the past two decades, analysing women in a variety of public relations roles in the 1990s and 2000s. The study looks at nine leading television series and movies from the United States and United Kingdom to examine how women in public relations are portrayed, and also collates the data from previous studies to develop a profile of how depictions have changed since the 1930s. Primarily, …

Menstrual Expressions And Menstrual Attitudes, Terence Hays Jun 2011

Menstrual Expressions And Menstrual Attitudes, Terence Hays

Terence Hays

Women's responses to a questionnaire survery in a Northeastern U.S. college community are examined to determine whether usage preferences in menstrual expressions are systematically related to reported attitudes towards menstruation. While those women who use expressions with negative connotations tend to report negative attitudes, the converse is not true. A striking contrast is noted between familiarity and use of menstrual expressions and, in general, menstrual expressions are not consistently associated with or reflective of menstrual attitudes.

Libguides On Steroids: Expanding The Use Of Libguides To Justify Workload And Support Library, Carol Leibiger Mar 2011

Libguides On Steroids: Expanding The Use Of Libguides To Justify Workload And Support Library, Carol Leibiger

Carol A Leibiger

LibGuides have captured the attention of the American academic library world. Subject guides like LibGuides are intended to provide access to resources for disciplines or courses to supplement library instruction provided during one-shot sessions or at the reference desk. LibGuides are available to users when and where they are needed. A constant refrain in the literature on subject guides is the workload inherent in their creation and maintenance. LibGuides are easy to create. However, the time required to maintain LibGuides continues to have a strong impact on workload for otherwise busy librarians.

As Information Literacy Coordinator (ILC), the presenter faces …

How Do We ‘See’ Occupations? An Examination Of Visual Research Methodologies In The Study Of Human Occupation, L. Hartman, A. Mandich, L. Magalhaes, Treena Orchard Dec 2010

How Do We ‘See’ Occupations? An Examination Of Visual Research Methodologies In The Study Of Human Occupation, L. Hartman, A. Mandich, L. Magalhaes, Treena Orchard

Dr. Treena Orchard

This article argues that visual research methodologies have potential to contribute to the study of occupation. The use of visual research methodologies is quickly growing in a number of disciplines and can help researchers to access information and reasoning not accessible through interview, log or survey. The reflexive, reflective, engaged process of creating and analysing visual materials allows for rich representations on behalf of participants, and immersion in the data on the part of researchers. This paper explores photovoice, body mapping and textual analysis of visual materials to understand how they can contribute to occupational science research. These methods were …

Working The Streets Of Post-Katrina New Orleans: An Interview With Deon Haywood, Executive Director, Women With A Vision, Inc., Doreen Piano

Doreen M Piano

While most people living in the United States watched, with sympathy and horror, the dismantling of New Orleans's infrastructure in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the levee breaks displacing nearly all its residents and killing nearly sixteen hundred people, leaving behind those without even the most basic necessities, few are aware of the seismic shifts the city has undergone during the recovery process. Activist and political journalist Jordan Flaherty succinctly expressed what many of us felt during the initial recovery period, following the storm: "There were practically no conversations that didn't reference Katrina. The storm defined every aspect of …

Writing The Love Of Boys: Origins Of Bishōnen Culture In Modernist Japanese Literature, Jeffrey Angles Dec 2010

Writing The Love Of Boys: Origins Of Bishōnen Culture In Modernist Japanese Literature, Jeffrey Angles

Jeffrey Angles

Despite its centuries-long tradition of literary and artistic depictions of love between men, around late nineteenth-century Japan began to portray same-sex desire as immoral. This book looks at the response to this during the critical era of cultural ferment between the two world wars as a number of Japanese writers challenged the idea of love and desire between men as pathological. Angles focuses on key writers, examining how they experimented with new language, genres, and ideas to find fresh ways to represent love and desire between men. He traces the personal and literary relationships between contemporaries such as the poet …

Masculinity And Marian Efficacy In Shakespeare's England, Ruben Espinosa Dec 2010

Masculinity And Marian Efficacy In Shakespeare's England, Ruben Espinosa

Ruben Espinosa

This book offers a new approach to evaluating the psychological "loss" of the Virgin Mary in post-Reformation England by illustrating how, in the wake of Mary's demotion, re-inscriptions of her roles and meanings only proliferated, seizing hold of national imagination and resulting in new configurations of masculinity. I survey the early modern cultural and literary response to Mary's marginalization, and argue that Shakespeare employs both Roman Catholic and post-Reformation views of Marian strength not only to scrutinize cultural perceptions of masculinity, but also to offer his audience new avenues of exploring both religious and gendered subjectivity. By deploying Mary's symbolic …
