Faulkner's Mothers: The Relationship Of Fact To Fiction In The Sound And The Fury And As I Lay Dying, Spring P. Zuidema
Faulkner's Mothers: The Relationship Of Fact To Fiction In The Sound And The Fury And As I Lay Dying, Spring P. Zuidema
Theses & Honors Papers
The author explores the relationship between actual events and circumstances in Faulkner’s own life and the fiction hat he wrote in his novels. William Faulkner was able to write his best work because he expected nothing from it. He was previously rejected by publishers, but furthermore rejected by his own family and two love interests. His mother was the only constant in his life. However she lacked love and caring and was domineering. These feelings of inferiority in Faulkner reflect in the children he wrote about and the traits of his mother reflect in the mothers in his novels as …

The Source Of Hip, Shelly J. Eversley
The Source Of Hip, Shelly J. Eversley
Publications and Research
This essay situates Norman Mailer's "The White Negro" (1957) and Jack Keroauc's The Subterraneans (1958) in the context of 1950s racial integration and the transformative potential of interracial sex. It argues that both authors' terms, "beat" and "hip," depend on the idea of "the Negro" whose status allows them to imagine a counter culture essential to their midcentury articulations of individual integrity and creative freedom.

Is There A Woman's Perspective? : An Exploration Of Gender Differences Along Republican And Conservative Lines., Jason Gainous
Faculty Scholarship
Is there a distinct “woman’s perspective?” This paper argues that the answer is an emphatic yes. American National Election Study survey data are used to explore Republican and conservative women’s attitudes concerning social spending issues and religiosity. Most of the previous gender gap research focuses on gender differences in attitudes by examining gender shifts in political party identification and voting, but do not adequately address opinion differences along gender lines between groups that think of themselves as similar. This paper asserts that if men and women who classify themselves as both conservative and Republican exhibit distinct differences, evidence of a …

(First paragraph) The salty ocean air was pleasantly mixed with smoke rising from gas grills using volcanic stones, plain old-fashioned ones using regular coals, and smokers using mesquite wood chips. As my American husband and I stepped out of our car and walked around to the back yard of the Bechars, the only African Sephardi family in Virginia Beach that Fourth of July, the aroma of sizzling hot dogs and hamburgers stirred our appetite. In her all- American neighborhood, Sonia welcomed us with a platter of spicy Tunisian meat and herbs rolled in phyllo dough and fried to perfection. I …

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
If you hung around CLAGS during Spring semester, you ran into a lot of fruitfully provocative contradictions. Take late April, for instance. On the 24th, Marcia Gallo presented her work-in-progress -- a dissertation on the Daughters of Bilitis -- in our Colloquium Series and noted how many of the lesbians who were active in the organization since its founding in 1955 disavowed any serious political aims. "We just wanted to have fun," Gallo reported them saying to her in the extensive interviews she has been doing as part of her research.

Time-Based Work-Family Conflict: Myth Or Reality?, Karyn H. Bernas
Time-Based Work-Family Conflict: Myth Or Reality?, Karyn H. Bernas
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The present study examined a time-based model of work-family conflict for a sample of 176 working women with childcare responsibilities. Building on the work of Edwards and Rothbard (2000) and role theory, a model was proposed to test the specific variables that define time-based work-family conflict. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to test the proposed hypotheses. Contrary to assumptions about time-based conflict, the results suggest that role time has a very limited impact on work-family conflict. Variables that were related to role performance and satisfaction included traditional gender role expectations, family involvement, family instrumental support, leader-member exchange, role overload, and …

We write in response to George Will's May 21 column, "The sad state of women's studies." Women's studies is thriving at the University of Nebraska. On the Lincoln campus, a major in this field has been offered for 25 years. In Kearney, students have been able to earn a minor in women's studies since 1989; a recent student conference there drew nearly 100 participants. Just 15 months after its approval at UNO, 11 students are pursuing the major in women's studies.
This discipline helps students answer questions and prepare for careers as no other field can. Among women's studies majors …

Acknowledging the relationship that exists among health outcomes, socioeconomic factors, and access to health care is key to understanding the health status of Latinas in Massachusetts. For example, poverty disproportionately affects Latinos in Massachusetts, and they have the lowest rate of health insurance in the Commonwealth despite the fact that Massachusetts has one of the most inclusive and comprehensive public health insurance programs in the nation. This situation impacts access to regular health care for Latinos and affects their overall health status. This fact sheet provides information on the following health areas of particular concern to Latinas: maternal and child …

Girls In Motion: World War I As A Catalyst For Change In The Cultural And Fictive Landscape Of American Girlhood, Emily Honey
Honors Theses
The girls' series fiction of the First World War is particularly adept at portraying both the service of women and their idealization, simultaneously encouraging young women to go out into the workforce in the name of patriotism and discouraging them from giving up their roles as the traditional caretakers of men.

Alan Lupack, Arthurian Literature By Women, Alison Langdon
Alan Lupack, Arthurian Literature By Women, Alison Langdon
English Faculty Publications
This is a timely volume, given the surge in scholarly and popular interest in women's voices in the Arthurian tradition. The explicit purpose of this anthology is to explore the "rich and forgotten tradition" of women writers' contributions to the corpus of Arthurian literature, sketching a female lineage of literary descent that traces "certain traditions common to women writing on Arthurian themes" (xi, 4). While the foreword provides an overview of more familiar women authors such as Rosemary Sutcliffe, Mary Stewart, and Persia Wooley, in their selections of works to anthologize Lupack and Lupack choose to focus on lesser-known texts …
