Authenticity And Humanity: Women In Ming Dynasty Theatre, Sarah Rogers
Authenticity And Humanity: Women In Ming Dynasty Theatre, Sarah Rogers
Symposium of Student Scholars
Since the dawn of theatrical performances, women had very limited opportunities for participation and presence in productions, often being portrayed onstage by male actors in untruthful, borderline degrading drag, which fortunately was not the case for the Ming Dynasty. My research investigates the societal roles and customs that women in the Ming Dynasty were initially assigned to and the shift they experienced in these roles; this shift empowered women to have more agency in every aspect of their everyday lives, especially in participating in performances. Methodologically, I consider the feminist/gender lens of Karl Marx’s Critical Theory and the opera The …
The Problematic Practices During The Process Of Marriage Proposal/Match Making, Hakima Afzaly
The Problematic Practices During The Process Of Marriage Proposal/Match Making, Hakima Afzaly
Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) at UNI
In Afghanistan, marriage is considered as something that completes life. It is very common to hear from Afghans that “without marriage, life and faith are incomplete.” Besides, the religion of Islam does not encourage celibacy. In fact, Islam states that the followers of Islam have legal rights to have sexual pleasure. Nevertheless, sexual intimacy is only permitted within marriage and sexual activity outside of marriage is considered illicit sex. It is considered adultery (Zena) that results in punishment. This is another reason why marriage is essential among the Afghan population, who are predominantly Muslims. That is why most Afghan parents …

Ciudad, Movimiento Y Transformación: "23 Segundos" En Dos Tiempos, Mariana Pensa
South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Undercover Heroines: The Role Of Women In The Oss, Alexander Pearson
Undercover Heroines: The Role Of Women In The Oss, Alexander Pearson
MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference
Women played significant roles in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II. Aline Griffith’s memoir The Spy Wore Red: My Adventures as an Undercover Agent in World War II recounts her work in preparation for the southern invasion of France following D-day, known as Operation Dragoon. Other written accounts from other female agents indicate that the leadership in Washington wanted women to fulfill traditional gender roles. For example, William J. Donovan stated that women in the OSS should be “behind desks and filing cases in Washington, invisible apron strings of an organization which touched every theater of …
'Household Managers': Women's Employment In Japan, Elizabeth Gaver
'Household Managers': Women's Employment In Japan, Elizabeth Gaver
MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference
Despite modern Japan’s evident economic success, persisting inequality between men and women is still apparent in the work field, furthered by societal expectations that drive women away from employment and overwork men. This presentation argues the causes of inequality for women in the work field, including societal expectations and the two-track system, as well as analyzes the effects on women’s lifestyle and careers, including the wage gap and prevalence of non-standard employment. Furthermore, this presentation argues the increasingly detrimental effects of employment inequality on Japanese society as a whole, such as the declining fertility rate. Lastly, this paper will focus …

A Feminist History of the Roland MC-505
Abstract
Roland’s MC 505 is a small portable music production instrument also known as agroovebox that functions as a programmable sixty-four note polyphonic synthesizer and drummachine with twenty-six interchangeable drum kits to use in various combinations. (1) The groovebox is equipped for both audio recording and live performance, both of which are analyzed in this research. The machine has many innovative elements that have carried over into modern music technology as well as some limitations that have since been left behind. This study acts as a historical evaluation of the growth and improvements …
Gender Roles Reviewed Through Shakespeare's Twelfth Night With 21st Century Applications, Hannah Lewis
Gender Roles Reviewed Through Shakespeare's Twelfth Night With 21st Century Applications, Hannah Lewis
Scholar Week 2016 - present
This thesis focuses on a modern-day adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night which aims to address negative gender stereotypes that are still in existence today. Through Shakespeare’s use of character representation and language, he creates a story that confronts the issue of gender stereotypes in the Elizabethan age. However, much is to be said about how gender roles in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is applicable to the 21st century. In this thesis, gender roles in both the Elizabethan age and the 21st century are explored in depth to provide examples of gender stereotypes. Thus, the study of gender roles is …
Interracial Relations: History And Cultural Identity In The Invention Of Wings, Taylor Hopkins
Interracial Relations: History And Cultural Identity In The Invention Of Wings, Taylor Hopkins
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
The historical fiction novel The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd displays a notable relationship between feminist and racial ideals during the nineteenth century. The story is based on the historical figure, Sarah Grimké, an American abolitionist and advocate for women’s rights. Over the course of thirty-five years, the narration alternates between the two main characters: Sarah Grimké and Hetty Handful Grimké, a young slave on the Grimké plantation. The interactions between the two begin when Hetty is presented to Sarah as a personal waiting maid for Sarah’s eleventh birthday. As the story continues, the dynamics between the two …
Mary Todd Lincoln: Duty And Depression, Bella Biancone
Mary Todd Lincoln: Duty And Depression, Bella Biancone
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln was perceived by Victorian America as materialistic and unbalanced. Behind the closed doors of the Executive Mansion, however, lie a grief-stricken mother struggling to manage an undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. Her fragile condition was exacerbated with each death of her beloved family. Yet, this First Lady played an integral role in the White House, acting as hostess, advisor to the President, and activist in her own right. She was not a passive bystander as her husband worked tirelessly to preserve the Union, but an active participant in the war effort. Following Abraham Lincoln’s premature …
Developing A Discrete Event Simulation Model To Overcome Human Trafficking, Sydney Meier
Developing A Discrete Event Simulation Model To Overcome Human Trafficking, Sydney Meier
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Human trafficking is a complex issue that affects society and the global economy. This societal problem involves the commercial exchange and exploitation of people through forced labor, domestic servitude, and sex trade. Human trafficking is considered the third most profitable organized crime in the world. By analyzing the flow of monetary gains/resources, information and trafficked people from the perspective of traffickers, police force, and advocacy organizations, this research aims to develop a discrete event simulation model to represent this complex system. The following paper describes the developmental process of acquiring data and creating a base model. While the model is …
She Lives: Bringing The Bride Of Frankenstein To Life In The Comics, Michael Torregrossa
She Lives: Bringing The Bride Of Frankenstein To Life In The Comics, Michael Torregrossa
Far West Popular Culture Association Annual Conference
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein recently celebrated its two-hundredth anniversary, and its story remains vibrant in popular culture, especially in the comics medium. I’ve done a number of conference papers in the past devoted to representations of the Creature and his creator, Victor Frankenstein, in comics and comic art, but I’ve only recently begun to look at how the character of the Bride of Frankenstein has been depicted. I’d like to use this opportunity to further that work and look more closely at continuations and recastings of her story. The Bride has no chance at life in Shelley’s novel, as she is …
Misrepresentation Of Victimhood During The Victorian Period, Elizabeth Davidson
Misrepresentation Of Victimhood During The Victorian Period, Elizabeth Davidson
Graduate Student Research Symposium
The sensation novel in the Victorian period often portrayed female victims as “fallen women.” These women encompassed those who suffered from addiction, engaged in prostitution, changed their identities, or were otherwise homeless. However, “fallen women” were generally misrepresented in both novel and reality. Anne Catherick, the female victim in The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, and the victims of Jack the Ripper are all represented as ending up in precarious situations resulting in their deaths by their own accord. However, these sets of victims traversed a multitude of missteps and unavoidable tragedy before their untimely deaths. The women who …
Who's Looking: Listening For The Hidden Story Of Women's Peace Leadership Learning, Robin Neustater
Who's Looking: Listening For The Hidden Story Of Women's Peace Leadership Learning, Robin Neustater
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
Globally, women engage in a multiplicity of agentic roles advocating for peace in their communities. Their involvement comes from an experienced or perceived need and the desire to do something about it. Women are recognized as crucial and competent actors in building peace, in post-war, and post genocide, and, in peace processes and negotiations and women’s community peacebuilding. In communities, women have proven themselves as leaders, bringing socio-cultural, economic and political positive change, while facing significant challenges and obstacles Yet, their expertise and efforts are seldom recognized or translated into positions of decision-making power. We do not know a great …
#Aminext: The Link Between European Colonization And Gender-Based Violence In Contemporary South Africa, Jenna Meredith Pagel
#Aminext: The Link Between European Colonization And Gender-Based Violence In Contemporary South Africa, Jenna Meredith Pagel
Capstone Showcase
Alarmingly, the female murder rate in South Africa is five times the global average (BBC News 2019). According to data from 2017 and 2018, a woman is murdered every four hours in South Africa (Wilkinson 2019). More than 30 women were killed by their spouses in August 2019, and at least 137 sexual offenses are committed per day in South Africa (Francke 2019).
For this thesis, and in order to understand why South Africa has some of the highest rates of violence against women in the world, I consult a number of scholars who conclude that the overall issue of …
Art Imitates Life: The Representation (Or Lack Thereof) Of Black Women In Video Games, Bug Gadson
Art Imitates Life: The Representation (Or Lack Thereof) Of Black Women In Video Games, Bug Gadson
Capstone Showcase
The key focus of this essay is to compare the representation of black women in media, primarily in television and film, to the representation of black female characters in video games. Using black feminist theory, this essay illustrates the treatment of black female characters in gaming. The particular and deliberate methods of writing black female characters in video games are used to highlight white video game characters and their narratives, instead of giving life and dimension to the black female characters themselves. The hostile and unsafe environments in gaming spaces are cultivated through upholding these harmful stereotypes of black women, …
