Contrary to the absence of Native American women in many reports and journals of early explorers and colonists, Native American women from the Coastal Algonquin and Wasco/Wishram communities played a central role in early trade with Euro-Americans through their traditional socioeconomic status as agricultural and subsistence gatherers and inter/intra-tribal tradeswomen. These native women harvested available natural resources for food, bark, and fiber with which they fed their communities and constructed baskets in standard units of measurement for trade reflecting that pre-contact trade networks and food value systems were well established and highly valued. This thesis examines the evolution of the American kitchen from the turn of the nineteenth century--historically, technologically, and socially--and the effect of such a transition on the lives of women. Following the introduction of such innovations as the kitchen sink, the cooking stove, the dishwasher, and the microwave oven, this thesis also examines the condition of women in the kitchen and observes the parallel growth, over time, of the kitchen and women's lives. The kitchen evolves from a place of imposed drudgery to that of the enlightened center of the home. We see that, as decades pass, the kitchen becomes …

Women face many challenges when they become mothers and decide to remain in the workforce. The choice of whether to remain in the workforce can be a hard decision for many mothers. With a reduced income, remaining at home can have an impact on the family's budget at a time when financial needs have increased with the addition of a new family member. This thesis will trace the progression of proto-feminist themes Marie de France and Christine de Pizan use to endorse women's empowerment through gynocentricity and female affectivity. As medieval women writers, both faced many injustices that went along 'with being a woman and a writer. Their solution, as seen in their themes, was for women to bond together to overcome the discrimination that hampered their lives and creativity.

Multiple sclerosis is a degenerative neurological disorder, affecting approximately 250,000-350,000 persons in the United States. Women are diagnosed twice as frequently as men, with the majority of those diagnoses occurring during their childbearing (typically between the ages of 20 and 40) years. For women with multiple sclerosis, the decision to bear children is complicated by numerous factors. First, conventional cultural images of motherhood rarely acknowledge women with disability of any kind as "fit" mothers. For a disabled woman to pursue motherhood often means confronting predominant ideals and frequently having to justify her decision. Second, multiple sclerosis has proven to be …

The study of the college experience and student self-esteem contributes to the understanding of human development. There are biological, environmental, and cognitive factors that influence student behavior. For women, the process is often preordained by gender roles shaped by men. The effects play a strong part in career development. This paper explores social, psychological, and biological research that informs human behavior. Studies about college influences on women's self-concept and self-esteem reveal the factors involved in their career persistence, and decision-making. Although women have been in the work force for time immemorial, their ability to obtain positions equal to men's have nearly always been compromised. There have been many efforts to rectify this situation, including legislation, corporate awareness, peer pressure, and individual achievements. But none has held the promise of as much transformation as the changes that are occurring in today's business world. This paper will explore whether the new business model, especially in the high technology sector, will enable women to break through the discrimination barriers of the past and compete on an equal playing field.
