“David Trullo’S Queer Revisionist Photography: Negotiating Spain’S Homonationalism And The Marketing Of Lgtbqi Human Rights As Commodities In Latin America.”, Gema Pérez-Sánchez

Gema Pérez-Sánchez

Working with the theoretical notions of “homonationalism” (Puar 2013) and
“pinkwashing” (Schulman 2011, 2012, Spade 2013) and using as a case study
two photographic series by contemporary Spanish gay photographer David
Trullo, I illuminate the complex situation in which contemporary queer Spanish
visual artists must produce their work: they resist homonationalism and homonormativity
at the same time that they must work within the very frames of
homonationalism and homonormativity to fund, produce, and disseminate their
particularly subversive queer politics. In analyzing Trullo’s series, Alterhistory:
Una historia verdadera (2010) — a gay and lesbian, homonormative rewriting
of late nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century …

Entre La Efervescencia Y La Ruptura De Un Espacio De Placer En Salón De Belleza De Mario Bellatin, Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio Nov 2014

Entre La Efervescencia Y La Ruptura De Un Espacio De Placer En Salón De Belleza De Mario Bellatin, Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio

Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio, Ph.D

Pégame Pero No Me Dejes: La Disputa Entre El Espacio Buga Y El Gay En Quizás No Entendí (1997) De Gerardo Guiza Lemus, Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio Feb 2014

Pégame Pero No Me Dejes: La Disputa Entre El Espacio Buga Y El Gay En Quizás No Entendí (1997) De Gerardo Guiza Lemus, Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio

Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio, Ph.D

Fencing Off Love/ Feeding Off Love: Men In Love And The Women They Distrust In Machado De Assis's Ressurreição And Dom Casmurro, Diana Anselmo-Sequeira May 2012

Fencing Off Love/ Feeding Off Love: Men In Love And The Women They Distrust In Machado De Assis's Ressurreição And Dom Casmurro, Diana Anselmo-Sequeira

Diana Anselmo-Sequeira

Sacrificio, Violencia Y Nación En Lituma En Los Andes De Mario Vargas Llosa, Cesar Valverde

This paper addresses gender, nation and sacrifice as central elements in Lituma en los Andes (1993), a novel published by Mario Vargas Llosa after he ran unsuccessfully for the Peruvian presidency. The book presents a number of masculine models that are either inadequate, romanticized or brutal and sets them against a backdrop of a Peru deep in the economic and physical violence of war against the Maoist guerrillas of Sendero Luminoso, a Peru forced to live in a “superstitious and obscurantist cultural fog” because of its indigenous past. My study shows how the narrow worldview of the protagonist is challenged …

Sex, The Body, And Human Subjectivity In Luis Gotyisolo's Erotic Novel "Escalera Hacia El Cielo", Terri Carney Nov 2011

Sex, The Body, And Human Subjectivity In Luis Gotyisolo's Erotic Novel "Escalera Hacia El Cielo", Terri Carney

Terri M. Carney

Best known for his tetralogy Antagonía, Luis Goytisolo began his literary career under the Franco dictatorship and soon developed a reputation as an intellectual's writer. His intricate and sinewy prose challenged readers to follow his narrators down labyrinthine paths of extended metaphors, embedded clauses and erudite references. Interestingly enough, the novels of Goytisolo published in the last decade lack the narrative complexity and structural experimentalism characteristic of his earlier works. These 90s novels include: Estatua con palomas (1992), Mzungo (1996), Placer licuante (1997), and Escalera hacia el cielo (1999). Some might feel that his change to a more traditional narrative …
