Responding to the felt need for a public space in which to discuss the special issues involved in teaching gender and sexuality, Alisa Solomon and I planned a series of three Pedagogy Workshops this spring. Over our combined 30+ years of teaching (!), we had been struck by both the unique difficulties of teaching in these areas and the lack of fora in which to explore these particular challenges. We'd also been moved by reflection on how issues had changed for us as teachers as students changed with changing times, and as we gained experience—not always positive— in the classroom.

"Who Is Sleeping In The Bed Of Sodom?", Nancy Levene

The question that I am left with from the extraordinary presentations over the conference's two days borrows from Rabbi Steve Greenberg's and Ludger Viefhues's discussion of the multiple images of the biblical "Sodom". Conventionally Sodom has signified a place of sexual deviance or, conversely, sexual censorship. But as Greenberg pointed out, in many traditional commentaries on the story of the condemnation of Sodom, the issue was not that the townspeople were engaged in forbidden sexual practices, but that they were violent and hostile to those in need of shelter and food.

In March 2000, QUNY, the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgendered/queer graduate student group at the CUNY Graduate Center, hosted former CLAGS Board member Elizabeth Freeman, who gave a highly informative talk about queer work and the academic job market. In May, QUNY celebrated the end of the first academic year in its new home with a social to which many new students came with ideas for next year's calendar. Everyone was especially excited about the Graduate Center's new concentration in lesbian/gay/queer studies that begins Fall 2000.

The impetus behind this project stems from an incident in February 1998 when several "gay" cruises originating from Europe and the U.S. were refused docking privileges in various parts of the Caribbean, invoking responses from British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.S. officials, both insisting on the egregious violation of human rights. The on-going dilemma over the docking of gay cruise ships led me to ask questions about the constructions of community created through and against such encounters and the production of a global gay identity that is contested by postcolonial situations. Hunter College professor Joan Tronto was sitting around her office one day, she told us at the Queer CUNY conference on May 6, and a student she'd never met dropped in and sort of just smiled at her. "Hi," the student said. "I saw your name on the flyer for the conference on Saturday," and that was all. The student flashed another moony grin, and then vanished. Over the course of a few days, several other students came by and did the same thing.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand why women from Scott County, Tennessee, left home to attain the baccalaureate degree and returned home to live and/or work. More specifically, understanding (1) the educational aspirations, motivations, and discouragements prior to attending college; (2) the educational persistence, motivations, and discouragements while attending college; (3) and the reasons for returning to Scott County after attaining the baccalaureate degree. Kicking At The Closet Door: The Opinions, Attitudes, And Experiences Of Military Homosexuals, Rodney Lee Parks

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the opinions, attitudes, and experiences of active-duty homosexual/bisexual military servicemembers. Very little research currently exists on this topic because the sample population remains hidden among the ranks of their heterosexual counterparts for fear of discrimination, harassment, and physical violence. Using a snowball sampling technique, survey analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship among homosexual/bisexual military servicemembers and assess their experiences. Most homosexual men and women serve effectively in the military and are proud of their military performance. Although many homosexuals join the military to suppress their desires, the majority (70%) felt that …

Black Women In Durham Politics, 1950-1996: From Grassroots To Electoral Politics, Grace Walton

New England Journal of Public Policy

Based on the author's senior thesis in African-American history; this article about black women by a black woman was conceived to educate Americans about a different kind of history. It illustrates the silent political struggles of black women in Durham, North Carolina, and their gradual acceptance into American politics from 1950 to 1996. The oral history design demonstrates that black women's political activity underwent a transformation from grassroots politics to full electoral participation, which brought them to the forefront of Durham politics. Four years ago, CLAGS sponsored a conference on the state of gay and lesbian history. I was one of several presenters in a session on biography. None of us on the panel had consulted beforehand. But by the beginning of the third or fourth presentation, a common pattern had emerged, and the audience erupted with laughter. Each one of us had opened our remarks with a mixture of apology and denial: we each were not, we assured the audience, writing a biography!

Shannon Minter Speaks On Transgender Issues In Queer Theory, Salvador Vidal

Shannon Minter, a staff attorney for the National Center for Lesbian Rights in San Francisco, presented an enlightening and engaging talk called Piety, Projection, and Denial: The Uses and Misuses of Transgender People in Queer Theory at a well-attended CLAGS colloquium on November 30th. Minter is well known for having transitioned from female to male (FTM) while working for a national LGB rights advocacy organization. In addition to his work on LGB custody, parenting, youth, marriage, and immigration issues at NCLR, he is also a leading advocate for the rights of transgendered people.

Using data from the most recently released Survey of Minority Businesses, this article explores the significance of businesses owned by minority women in Massachusetts. I describe the number of such businesses, the rates at which the number of such businesses are expanding, and the average sales and receipts of women-owned businesses — and I compare these statistics for White, Black, Latino and Asian businesses.

As Community Development Organizations (CDOs) are the primary vehicle for development in low-income neighborhoods, scholars have begun to examine them in terms of the degree to which they increase citizen participation, increase civic capacity, as well as stabilize and revitalize neighborhoods through the creation of social capital. According to Putnam, civic action requires the existence of social capital; he defines social capital as "norms, trust, and networks." As Gittell and Vidal note, there has been a "virtual industry of interest and action created around the implication of Putnam's findings for the development of low-income communities."

Humane economics, democratic economic participation, and democratic economic control are words not often combined and terms rarely used by traditional economic developers and urban planners, especially when addressing inner-city redevelopment. Most often, discussions about economic development and the elimination of poverty focus on job creation, workforce development, and access to job opportunities - promoting the corporate model of growth and fortifying big business's penetration into and control of community economics. In assessing the post-independence status of women in Eritrea, I want to pose two questions. First, how did the leadership of the national liberation movement, the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF), embark on promoting women's emancipation, given the attitudes firmly rooted in the minds of both men and women that ran counter to the idea of an emancipated woman?
