“As Tough As It Gets”: Women In Boston Politics, 1921-2004, Kristen A. Petersen, Carol Hardy-Fanta Phd, Karla Armenoff

This study seeks to answer the question: Given the wealth of talent and resources women possess—and the state offers—why is it so tough for women to gain representation in Boston City Hall? To answer this question, and to document the efforts women have made over almost 100 years, we examine the history of women who have run for and won—or lost—election to the Boston City Council in the 20th century. With many still feeling the effects of a post-election depression, around forty people attended CLAGS's panel "Bodies and Landscapes of Control in the Neoliberal City" on November 16th. The panel sought to examine the concrete ways in which neoliberal policy re(shapes) the urban landscape and the relationship between these macroeconomic factors and the construction and deployment of erotic identities and experiences.

"Claiming Queer Cultural Citizenship: Gay Latino (Im)Migrant Acts In San Francisco", Horacio N. Roque Ramirez Dr.

The essay foregrounds the social and political histories of four gay Chicano and mexicano activists in the San Francisco Bay Area, demonstrating how their cultural and political organizing labor challenges the historical presumption that all queers are legal citizens or that all immigrants are heterosexual. Drawing on Renato Rosaldo’s conception of cultural citizenship and Lisa Lowe's notion of "immigrant acts," the essay traces these activists’ negotiation of social membership and citizenship through their cultural work, making racial ethnic and sexualized political claims in historical periods wrought by AIDS, gentrification, racism, and anti-immigrant legislations.

Men, Masculinity, And Male Domination: Reframing Feminist Analyses Of Sex Work, C. Heike Schotten

C. Heike Schotten

Prostitution has been considered by feminists as, alternatively, a gendered relation, an issue of sexuality, and a kind of labor. In this paper, I argue for an integrated feminist analysis of sex work which focuses on the first and third of these (leaving the second in the background) and orients itself toward consideration of sex work as a symptom or function of various masculinities.
