Searching For Sapphistries: An Archive Of Felt Photographs, Lauren Fisher
Searching For Sapphistries: An Archive Of Felt Photographs, Lauren Fisher
Theses and Dissertations
Using the holdings of the Peter J. Cohen Collection in New York City as a platform from which to engage the queer impulse of feeling backward, this thesis posits that vernacular photographs can be included in sapphistry through the creation of a counterarchive of “felt photographs,” where a reading of photographs is animated by a queer positionality and knowing.
The Losses, The Heartbreaks, The Hungers..., Nestor Perez-Moliere
The Losses, The Heartbreaks, The Hungers..., Nestor Perez-Moliere
Theses and Dissertations
The Losses, The Heartbreaks, The Hungers… is a photographic body of work in which I engage in a conversation with myself on mental health and self-compassion. I am able to exist with myself within the same frame through the use of compositing techniques that depict a multiplicity of selves. In the work, I dwell in an isolated, psychological space that is constructed through a claustrophobic framing of the camera and black and white film imagery that accentuates the shadows and the light. The interactions with myself are of mixed nature: at times I am abusive to myself, but other times …
Imaging Exploitation, Complexity, And Paradox In Subaltern Labor Photography, Mahnure Janis
Imaging Exploitation, Complexity, And Paradox In Subaltern Labor Photography, Mahnure Janis
Theses and Dissertations
Imaging Exploitation, Complexity, and Paradox in Subaltern Labor Photography is an expanded cinema performance examining 'cheap' labor in the fast fashion industry through a self-reflexive diasporic lens. The images and narration explores the garment factories in Bangladesh and contains ‘a photographer’s cognitive meta-data’, including ethical dilemmas while taking the images.
Self-Portraits And Gravity Bodies, Tim Foley
Self-Portraits And Gravity Bodies, Tim Foley
Theses and Dissertations
Self-portraiture allows for the rapid fruition of ideas. An analysis of the work of Francesca Woodman and Ana Mendieta shows how the artist’s body can be variably used in photography. David Wojnarowicz’s memoir establishes a connection between gravity and the human condition. My practice has been informed by this connection.
Constraint And Control, Patricia Ayres
Constraint And Control, Patricia Ayres
Theses and Dissertations
I have long considered themes of the body. Drawing on my knowledge as a fashion designer, I bring materials and hardware from the fashion industry into my artwork transforming and rendering them non-functional. My sculptures relate to stories of isolation, separation, and confinement. The following pages will analyze how the United States penal system controls, constrains and restricts the body through physical and psychological wounds. Furthermore, they will examine how the Catholic Church controls people’s minds and behavior through a ritualistic belief system.
Private Rainbows, Mikey F. Estes
Private Rainbows, Mikey F. Estes
Theses and Dissertations
I make art that refers to how the self is mediated through structures, objects, and images — a kind of self-portraiture that circles around its subject, reflecting a state of simultaneous formation and disintegration. Over the past few years, I have used my iPhone as a tool to make images of everyday life. As the user of this device, I am defined by both my presence and absence. I am interested in the process of locating the self within the scattered yet ordered space of the screen.
Long Vacation In Bk, Doll Chao
Long Vacation In Bk, Doll Chao
Theses and Dissertations
The diary of a transcontinental search for self and place, a journey through obtuse politics, cultural oppression, and loneliness - this film is the document of a lost generation of Taiwanese youth and its conflict with China, swirling in a transpacific gyre of sound, image, and text.
Tipping Point, Pang Z. Vang
Tipping Point, Pang Z. Vang
Theses and Dissertations
What happens to a woman at the tipping point under oppression in a patriarchal society? How does she behave? Pulling from the vagina dentata mythologies, and personal and collective experiences of rape culture, I formed a body of work which problematize the stereotypical narrative of victim/perpetrator. As a visual and conceptual exploration, my work explores the themes of desire, agency/non-agency, and violence [as it manifests within and outside of the body]. Utilizing visual and conceptual quotations from film, pornography and sex toys, these works subvert the exoticized stereotype of the Asian woman as sexual plaything.
